3. Engine Test General
These procedures tell you how to do an engine test.
The tables in Paragraphs C (Engine Starting and Warm-Up), D (ECU Test, Propeller Control Test and
ECU Swap Test) and E (Performance Check) have a 'Result/Comments' column. You can take
photocopies of these pages into the cockpit and enter results and comments.
For more data on the engine and engine performance testing, refer to the Thielert TAE 125-01
Operator's Manual.
Note: The engine drives the propeller through a speed-reducing gear. All RPM's are
shown as propeller RPM's.
CAUTION: ONLY TAE-AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL MAY READ ENGINE DATA WITH
THE 'ECU OPERATOR' SOFTWARE. REFER TO TAE SERVICE
BULLETIN NO. 125-0003.

B. Preparation

WARNING: DO NOT LET PERSONS INTO THE SAFETY RANGE OF THE
AIRPLANE. PROPELLERS CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Look in the engine records for reports of
problems.
(2) Make sure that all switches are OFF.
(3) Position the airplane on level ground. Make sure
that:
S There are no loose stones on the ground
near the propeller.
S The safety zone around the airplane is clear.
S The airplane heads into the wind.
% Refer to Figure 5.
(4) Check engine oil level, gearbox oil level, and
coolant level.
(5) Do a test of a sample of fuel for contamination. Refer to Section 12-10.
(6) Put chocks in front of each main wheel.
(7) Make sure that there is enough fuel for the
engine test:
S Set the ELECTRIC MASTER key switch to
ON.
S Read the fuel quantity indicator.
S Set the ELECTRIC MASTER key switch to
OFF.
S Refuel the airplane if necessary.

C. Engine Starting and Warm-Up
Refer to the TAE 125-01 Operator's Manual for operating limitations.

(1) Enter the cockpit. Take the laptop computer
and CAN interface with you.
(2) Set the parking brake to
ON.
(3) Make sure that the
emergency fuel valve is set
to NORMAL.
(4) Make sure that the
passenger door is closed
and locked. Close and lock
the canopy.
(5) Set the power lever to IDLE. Make sure that the power
lever is free to move.
(6) Connect laptop computer to
service plug on TAE harness
with CAN interface. Switch
computer on and start the
"ECU Operator" software.
(7) Set the ELECTRIC
MASTER key switch to ON.
% (8) Do a test of the annunciator
% panel.
Refer to Section 31-51.
(9) Set the alternate air control
to OFF.
(10) Make sure the area of the
propeller is clear.

(11) Set the ENGINE MASTER
switch to ON.
(12) Make sure that the engine
instruments read correctly.
The RPM, LOAD and FUEL
FLOW indications must be
zero (0). Dashes (-) indicate
a malfunction.
(13) Turn the ELECTRIC
MASTER key switch to the
START position.
Do not start the engine as
long as the white GLOW
status light is illuminated.
(14) When the engine starts:
S Release the ELECTRIC
MASTER key switch.
