WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO ANY
WORK ON THE PROPELLER. IF THE ENGINE IS TURNED, THE
PROPELLER CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe:
S Set the ignition switch to OFF.
S Set the throttle to IDLE.
S Set the mixture control to LEAN CUT-OFF.
(2) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(3) Disconnect the spark plug cables from the spark
plugs.
(4) Put the tracking stand behind the propeller. Do not move the tracking stand during
the test.
(5) Turn the propeller backwards to align a blade
with the tracking stand.
(6) Measure the distance from the stand to the blade. Measure from the stand to a point on
the trailing edge 10 cm (4 in) from the
blade tip.
(7) Do items 5 and 6 for the other blades and record
the values.
(8) The difference between any blades must not be
more than 3 mm (1/8 inch).
4. Blade Repairs
You can do minor repairs but you cannot do major repairs. Refer to the propeller manufacturer’s
manual for more data about assessing blade damage and doing blade repairs.

Section 61-11
Propeller Assembly - TAE 125 Diesel Engine
1. General
The DA 40 with the TAE 125 Diesel engine has an mt-Propeller MTV-6-A /187-129 variable pitch
propeller. This propeller has 3 blades. The blades are made from wood and are covered with GFRP.
The blades have an acryl lacquer painted finish. The outboard leading-edges of the blades are
protected from erosion by a stainless-steel sheath. The stainless-steel sheath is bonded into position.
The inboard section of the leading-edge is protected by a self-adhesive rubber strip (PU tape).
This Section tells you how to remove and install the propeller and how to do a test for blade tracking.
Section 61-21 tells you about the propeller governor.
Refer to the propeller manufacturer’s manuals for more data on the propeller.
2. Description
Figure 1 shows you the propeller. The propeller hub has six studs on the rear face. The propeller
attaches to the engine crankshaft flange with six nuts and washers.
A spinner bulkhead (spinner backplate) attaches to the rear of the hub with six bolts. The bolts are
locked with wire. A front support plate attaches to the front of the hub with six screws. The screws are
locked with wire. A spinner which is made from composite material attaches to the aft bulkhead with
screws.
The engine has an integral governor. The governor controls the propeller pitch hydraulically. Gearbox
oil flows via the gearbox driven pump and a pressure limiter valve to the governor. The governor
consists of an electrically controlled three-way valve to control the oil pressure in the propeller pitch
change mechanism. The oil pressure is increased for higher pitch angles and reduced for lower pitch
angles. The oil flows from the governor to the propeller hub through the hollow propeller shaft.

3. Operation
A pre-loaded spring (return spring) turns the propeller blades towards fine pitch. In addition, when the
propeller is turning, centrifugal twisting moments also cause the blades to turn towards fine pitch.
Hydraulic pressure in the cylinder acts on a piston and the piston moves the blades towards coarse
