(6) Disconnect the control cable at the alternate air
lever in the cockpit.
On the pilot's side under the instrument
panel.
(7) Move the control cable clear of the airplane.

B. Install the Alternate Air Control Cable

(1) Move the alternate air control cable in position in
the airplane.
Through the hole in the firewall and the
slot in the floor area near the alternate air
lever.
(2) Connect the alternate air control cable to the
alternate air lever in the cockpit.
(3) Install the feed-thru to the engine side of the
firewall with firewall sealant:
S Put the 2 parts of the feed-thru round the
control cable.
S Push the feed-thru in the firewall.
S Put the 2 shields in position over the feedthru.
Apply firewall sealant.
S Install 2 pop-rivets to attach the shields to
the firewall.
Use PR 812 (MIL-S-38249 Type 1)
Firewall Sealant.
(4) Install the alternate air valve. Refer to Paragraph 3.
(5) Adjust the alternate air control cable. Refer to Paragraph 5.

5. Test/Adjust the Alternate Air Control Cable

WARNING: DO NOT STAND WITHIN THE DANGER AREA OF THE PROPELLER.
IF THE ENGINE STARTS, THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE DEATH OR
INJURY TO PERSONS.
WARNING: YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU
DO WORK ON THE ENGINE CONTROLS. IF THE PROPELLER TURNS
IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe:
S Set the ELECTRIC MASTER key switch to
OFF.
S Set the ENGINE MASTER switch to OFF.
S Set the power lever to IDLE.
(2) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.
(3) Disconnect the airplane main battery. Refer to Section 24-34.
(4) Move the alternate air lever in the cockpit from
OFF to ON:
S Make sure the lever moves freely with no
restrictions.
(5) Set the alternate air lever in the cockpit to OFF
and hold it in position:
S Make sure that the alternate air valve is fully
closed.
With the alternate air valve fully closed
there must be at least 3 mm (0.125 in)
clearance (bounce) between the
alternate air lever and the stop.
(6) Set the alternate air lever in the cockpit to ON
and hold it in position:
S Make sure that the alternate air control valve
is in the fully open position.

(7) If necessary, adjust the alternate air control
cable.
At the alternate air lever.
(8) Do items 5 to 7 again as necessary to get the
correct settings.
(9) Connect the airplane battery. Refer to Section 24-34.
(10) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.

Engine Drains - Lycoming Engine
1. General
The IO-360-M1A engine installed in the DA 40 has these engine drains:
) Fuel/Oil drain for the engine-driven fuel-pump.
) Fuel drain for the fuel-flow-divider.
) Fuel drain for the induction manifold.
Refer to the Lycoming Operator's Manual for more data on the engine drains.
2. Description
A. Engine Driven Fuel Pump Drain
A clear tube makes the fuel drain for the engine driven fuel pump. The fuel pump is mounted on the
rear accessory housing. The tube attaches to a pipe connector at the rear of the pump. Cable ties
attach the tube to the engine breather pipe. The drain connects to the main drain tube assembly at
the rear of the engine compartment.
B. Fuel Distributor Drain
A clear tube makes the fuel drain for the fuel distributor. The fuel distributor is mounted centrally on
top of the engine. A hose clip attaches the drain tube to the drain outlet which is on the left side of
the fuel distributor. The tube goes back through a rubber grommet in the engine cooling baffle and
down the main drain tube assembly at the rear of the engine compartment.
C. Induction Manifold Drain
An aluminum alloy pipe makes the induction manifold drain. The induction manifold drain connection
is at the bottom of the engine below the engine sump. The drain goes left from the drain connection
and then aft over the exhaust muffler to the main drain tube assembly at the rear of the engine
