B. Preparation

WARNING: DO NOT LET PERSONS INTO THE SAFETY RANGE OF THE
AIRPLANE. PROPELLERS CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Look in the airplane records for reports of
problems.
(2) Position the airplane on level ground. Make sure
that:
S There are no loose stones on the ground
near the propeller.
S The safety zone around the airplane is clear.
S The airplane heads into the wind.
Refer to Figure 6.
(3) Do a test of a sample of fuel for contamination. Refer to Section 12-10
(4) Put chocks in front of each main wheel.
(5) Remove the Pitot probe cover.
(6) Make sure that there is enough fuel for the
engine test:
S Set the ALT/BAT switch to ON.
S Read the fuel quantity indicator.
S Set the ALT/BAT switch to OFF.
S Refuel the airplane if necessary.

(7) Read the engine oil contents. Add oil if
necessary.
Refer to Section 12-10.
7. Engine Starting
See the Lycoming Operator's Manual for operating limits.

(1) Enter the cockpit.
(2) Set the parking brake to ON.
(3) Make sure that the fuel selector/shut-off valve is
set to LEFT or RIGHT.
(4) Set the fuel selector valve as required.
(5) Make sure that the passenger door is closed and
locked. Close and lock the canopy.
(6) Make sure that:
S The throttle lever is free to move.
S The mixture lever is free to move.
S The propeller control lever is free to move.
(7) Set the ALT/BAT switch to ON.
(8) Make sure that the engine indicator display panel
reads correctly.
% (9) Do a test of the annunciator panel. Refer to Section 31-50.

(10) Set the alternate air control to OFF.
(11) Set the propeller control to MAX RPM. Fully forward.
(12) Set the electrical fuel pump to ON. Listen for the
fuel pump working, Make sure that:
S The fuel pressure increases.
(13) Set the throttle to 1/4 open.
(14) Prime the engine:
S If the engine is cold, set the mixture control to
full RICH for 3 seconds. Then move the
mixture control to IDLE CUT-OFF.
S If the engine is warm, set the mixture control
to full RICH for 1 second. Then move the
mixture control to IDLE CUT-OFF.
(15) Press on both brake pedals together and hold the
flying controls in neutral.
(16) Make sure the area of the propeller is clear.
(17) Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Make sure that the engine start light
comes on.
(18) When the engine starts:
S Release the ignition switch to the BOTH
position.
S Move the mixture control to RICH.
Make sure that the engine start light
goes out.
Fully forward.
(19) Set the throttle to give 1000 - 1200 RPM. Make sure that there are no warning
lights on.
(20) Monitor the oil pressure. The oil pressure must rise to 25 psi
minimum, within 30 seconds of starting
the engine. If it does not, then you must
shut-down the engine.
(21) Set the electrical fuel pump to OFF.
(22) Set the throttle to give 1500 RPM. Warm up the engine until the oil
temperature reaches 100 °F. Monitor
the instruments for unusual indications.

8. Measure/Adjust Engine Performance
A. Measure Engine Performance

(1) Set the engine to 2000 RPM.
(2) Do a test of the LASAR system (if installed) and
the left magneto:
S Set the ignition switch to L.
S Set the ignition switch to BOTH.
The RPM must decrease by 50 - 175
RPM. If the LASAR system is installed,
the ignition status light (IGN or
IGNITION) must come on.
The RPM must return to 2000 RPM. If
the LASAR system is installed, the
ignition status light (IGN or IGNITION)
must go off after 20 seconds.
(3) Do a test of the LASAR system (if installed) and
the right magneto:
S Set the ignition switch to R.
S Set the ignition switch to BOTH.
The RPM must decrease by 50 - 175
RPM. If the LASAR system is installed,
