Q. What does the medical examination involve?
A. It is a general physical examination to determine whether you meet
medical standards established to ensure that you can safely perform
the duties and/or exercise the privileges of a pilot certifi cate.
Q. If I am denied a medical certifi cate, what are my appeal rights?
A. If you are denied a medical certifi cate by an AME, you may, within
30 days after the date of the denial, apply in writing to the FAA’s
Federal Air Surgeon for reconsideration of that denial. If the FAA
upholds the denial, you may apply to the National Transportation
Safety Board for appeal.
Q. How can I obtain a duplicate medical certifi cate?
A. Send a signed request (full signature) including the following:
Full name, Social Security number (optional), mailing address, date
of birth, and a check or money order for $2.00 made out to the
Federal Aviation Administration. Send to:

your remittance will be included on the bill itself. If you request a certifi ed
blue ribbon true copy, there will be an additional $3.00 charge.
Q. How do I request a full review of my medical records or a
special issuance?
A. Send a signed request to the Federal Air Surgeon requesting
reconsideration or special issuance certifi cation (per 14 CFR Part
67.401):
