The split-engine transport specification defines requirements for equipment which will enable replacement at remote line stations where a wide body freighter airplane routing is unavailable. The split-engine transport system includes all the tooling and a portable overhead hoist capability to perform the required disassembly and assembly of the engine at a remote line station.
The engine must be sectionalized and transported in two major sections: fan case unit and core engine unit. The gearbox remains intact with the fan case on one pallet. The compressor inlet cone, first stage axial compressor rotor assembly, front compressor rotor and stator assembly and a fan cases build fixture are included on the fan case pallet. A second pallet carries the core engine unit. The core engine pallet has two positions: one for transport (low position) and an adaptation for engine assembly or disassembly (high position). The core engine unit is also used to bootstrap the assembled engine onto the airplane wing.
The self-contained system includes a portable gantry, for hoisting during engine assembly/disassembly, and a lightweight trailer for bootstrapping and ground handling the out-of-service engine. The gantry and trailer are packaged on a third pallet for transport with the engine. Engine assembly/disassembly tools are also carried on the third pallet, with the gantry. A typical 3-pallet split-engine transport system is illustrated on Figure 5-3.

5.3 SHIPPING STANDS
5.3.1 Engine Shipping Stands Description
The engine transportation stand including cradle and base is designed to provide shock and vibration protection during truck transport and air shipment. The stand has the capability of supporting the engine with and without the Engine Build Unit (EBU) equipment installed. The stand mounted on casters supports the complete powerplant for on-wing installation/removal and is compatible with the Boeing-designed bootstrap hoisting equipment.
