3.3 ENGINE OVERHAUL SLING
3.3.1 Engine Overhaul Sling Description
Engine mounts for a sling/hoist are shown in Figure 3-4. These are the secondary points identified in Figure 3-2 and Figure 3-3. No side load provisions are incorporated in these lift points.
The engine sling is mainly used to transport the engine from one cradle to another cradle or workstand. The hook or hoist ring is located off the center of the beam due to the CG location of the engine. A ballast is further employed to fine-tune the weight distribution.
The Boeing-designed sling is part number B71027. Associated workstands and adapters, used with the sling when building up a basic engine to on-wing standards, are:

3.4 ENGINE BOOTSTRAP HANDLING EQUIPMENT
3.4.1 Engine Bootstrap Description
The bootstrap handling system eliminates dependence on heavy handling equipment (e.g., overhead hoists and forklifts). The system includes forward and aft arms with hoists and dynamometers attached. The arms attach to the strut as shown in Figure 3-5. The hoists are attached to an engine cradle/dolly which, in turn, supports the engine at the primary ground handling points. The bootstrap system permits engine installation and removal with the thrust reverser installed.
The forward arms, with dynamometers attached, are used to control engine and cradle roll attitude. The aft arms, with one dynamometer on the inboard side of the engine, are used to control engine and cradle pitch attitude. The dynamometer readings are used to establish the point at which the bootstrap equipment is supporting the weight of the engine.
