3.7 STRUT
3.7.1 Engine Strut Description
Each engine strut is the support structure between the engine and the airplane wing. Each contains the forward and aft engine mounts, engine precooler, air ducts, fuel lines, hydraulic lines and electrical lines. Figure 3-15 shows the basic strut and the method of installation to the wing.
ENGINE STRUT INSTALLATION/REMOVAL
The strut is installed and removed with an overhead sling (Figure 3-16) which attaches to two GSE hard points, at Nacelle Station 128.0 and 174.92, on both sides of the strut. The sling consists of an inboard and outboard frame connected by a lifting bar extending across the top of the strut. The lifting bar has provisions for overhead hoist attachment.
Strut installation requires overcoming a maximum 3000 lb (1361 kg) vertical preload. The preload is applied, either up or down, through a preload fixture (Figure 3-17) which attaches to the forward engine mount provisions. The preload is measured with a dynamometer mounted between the hoist and the preload fixture.

Side link installation determines the size of the gap between the strut and wing fittings. The alignment fixture (Figure 3-18) gauges the bushing location that is required to maintain the gap within limits.
The upper link, diagonal brace, and mid spar fuse pins can also be replaced with the engine on-wing with the use of the sling as shown in Figure 3-19. Note the alternate configuration required when removing / installing the mid spar fuse pins because of the necessity to apply a differential load to the engine and strut. The crane scale provides the visibility of the load exerted: maximum 13,500 lb (6123 kg).
