Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the fuel quantity indicating system. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair column.
Trouble  Possible Cause  Repair 
Fuel quantity indication for one tank incorrect/blank, other tank reads correctly.  Fuel probe unit in fuel tank defective/contaminated. Fuel quantity indication system wiring defective.  Defuel/refuel the related tank to flush the fuel probe. If the indication is still incorrect then replace the fuel probe. Do a test of the indication system wiring. Refer to Chapter 92-00 for the wiring diagrams. 
Fuel quantity indication on both tanks incorrect/blank.  Fuel quantity indicator defective. Fuel quantity indication system wiring defective. Engine integrated indicating system defective.  Replace the fuel quantity indicator. Do a test of the indication system wiring. Refer to Chapter 92-00 for the wiring diagrams. Refer to the system manufacturer's manuals.

Maintenance Practices
1. General
The maintenance practices in this Section tell you how to replace a fuel tank probe and a fuel tank
sensor.
Refer to Section 31-10 for data on removing/installing a fuel quantity indicator.
Obey the safety precautions for fuel at all times.

WARNING: DO NOT GET FUEL ON YOU. FUEL CAN CAUSE SKIN DISEASE. WARNING: DO NOT ALLOW FIRE NEAR FUEL. FUEL BURNS AND CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT. WARNING: DO NOT BREATH FUEL VAPOR. FUEL VAPOR CAN MAKE YOU ILL.
2. Remove/Install a Fuel Tank Sensor
Obey the safety precautions for fuel at all times.
A. Remove a Fuel Tank Sensor
Detail Steps/Work Items  Key Items/References 
(1)  Defuel the wing that has the fuel tank sensor that you will remove.  Refer to Section 12-10. 
(2)  Remove the inboard access panel for the fuel tank.  Refer to Section 52-40. 
(3)  Disconnect the electrical cables for the sensor.  At the in-line connector. 
(4)  Remove the sensor from the tank. 
(5)  Remove and discard the O-ring seal from the sensor.

B. Install a Fuel Tank Sensor
DA 40 Series

Detail Steps/Work Items  Key Items/References 
(1)  Install a new O-ring seal onto the sensor. 
(2)  Install the sensor in the fuel tank: S Apply sealant to the thread of the sensor. S Move the sensor into position in the fuel tank mount. S Screw the sensor fully home into the mount. S Tighten the sensor.  Use 'seal-lube' or 'fuel-lube'. Make sure that the O-ring is correctly positioned. 
(3)  Connect the electrical cables to the sensor.  At the in-line connector. 
(4)  Do a test for the correct operation of the fuel sensor: S Set the airplane ALT/BATT switch to ON. S Monitor the low fuel caution light on the annunciator panel. S Put 4 US gallons of fuel into the fuel tank that has the fuel sensor that you will test. S Set the airplane ALT/BATT switch to OFF.  The low fuel caution message must be activated. The low fuel caution message must disappear. 
(5)  Refuel the airplane.  Refer to Section 12-10. 
(6)  Do a check for leaks at the fuel sensor installation. 
(7)  Install the inboard access panel for the fuel tank.  Refer to Section 52-40.
