 A. General
 (1)  
The procedures that follow give instructions to repair insulation blankets that have tears or holes. If a blanket has too much damage, you must replace it with a new one. You can use the damaged blanket as a template to make a new one.

 WARNING:_______DO NOT BREATHE THE ASBESTOS DUST. PUT ON A PROTECTIVE RESPIRATOR WHEN YOU DRILL THE LAVATORY PANELS. THE ASBESTOS DUST CAN GET IN YOUR MOUTH OR NOSE IF YOU DO NOT USE THE PROTECTIVE RESPIRATOR AND CAN CAUSE CANCER OR LUNG DISEASE.

Obey this WARNING during all of this task.

 (1)  Clean the damaged area with cheescloth that is soaked with MEK or acetone.

 S 348-183
 (2)  Cut a piece of fabric that is the same as the damaged blanket or cover.
 NOTE: The fabric must be one inch larger in all directions than
____ the damaged area. Make the corners of the patch round.
 If the damage is more than 25 percent of the blanket or cover size, do the procedure given to replace a blanket with too much damage.

 (3)  Apply adhesive or cement to the damaged area and the patch.
 NOTE: For blanket or cap strip assemblies, you can use a patch
____
 of OT-26C tape, in an alternative repair.

Push the patch onto the damaged area tightly to make sure there is a satisfactory bond.

Apply adhesive to the velcro tapes if it is necessary to bond them to the blankets or covers.


 F. Replace Insulation Blankets with Too Much Damage
 NOTE: Use this procedure if the repair area is more than 25 percent
____
 of the size of the blanket or cover.

Remove the damaged sidewall or ceiling blanket (AMM 25-21-05/401).

 (2)  
Make a new blanket with the steps that follow:


 (a)  Use the damaged blanket to make a paper template.
 NOTE: Use the same quantity and thickness of layers for
____ the new blanket as there were in the damaged blanket.
 (b)  
Cut fiberglass insulation to the same shape as the template.

 (c)  
Put the layers of the fiberglass insulation between the inboard and outboard sides of the fabric covering.
