reliability workplace is part of Relex’s mission to introduce
young people to the fields of engineering and technology, and
to encourage and build their academic and professional futures.
This year, Relex interns had the opportunity to experience a
variety of hands-on reliability engineering projects and contribute
to the success of Relex 2009. Interns' projects included roles in
Quality Assurance, Training, and Consulting Services.
Wil Hamilton. Wil is a rising junior at
Carnegie Mellon University majoring in
Mechanical Engineering. Wil ran regression tests for Relex
Quality Assurance and provided research assistance for Relex
Consulting Services.
Nathan Peffer. Nathan is a rising junior
at Pennsylvania State University majoring
in Biology. Nathan ran regression tests for
Relex Quality Assurance, assisted in the creation of training
materials for Relex 2009, and provided graphics support for
various projects throughout the company.
Ryan McGuire. Ryan is a rising sophomore
at Kettering University majoring in Computer
Science/Computer Engineering. Ryan created
both manual and automated test cases for Relex
Quality Assurance and conducted platform tests.
Brad Van Fleet. Brad is starting his freshman
year at the University of Pittsburgh majoring
in Bioengineering. Brad ran regression tests
for Relex Quality Assurance and assisted in the
updating of training materials for Relex 2009.
Ryan Van Fleet. Ryan is entering his senior
year at Greater Latrobe High School, and plans to
attend college to major in Computer Engineering.

test cases for Relex Quality Assurance.
Clair Hann. (Not pictured) Clair is a
rising junior at Carnegie Mellon University
majoring in Mechanical Engineering. She ran regression tests for
Relex Quality Assurance.

Get Ready for the 2010 Reliability and Maintainability Symposium
The 2010 Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS) will be held in San Jose, California, on January 25-28,
2010. This year's theme will be “Transcending Traditional Reliability Approaches — from Theory to Practice." You can find more
information at the RAMS Web site, www.rams.org. Relex Application Engineers will be there to demonstrate the new Relex 2009
software and to answer your questions.
Relex engineers are also looking forward to once again presenting their work. Probable technical paper presenters include Suprasad
V. Amari, Karen Mohan Bowman, and Glenn Dill.
Karen Mohan Bowman, an Application
Engineer at Relex, was the winner of
the Evans/McElroy Award in 2008
for her paper, A Practical Method for
Failure Analysis Using Incomplete
Warranty Data.
Suprasad V. Amari, PhD, received the 2009
Stan Ofsthun Award for the best paper by a
member of the Society of Reliability Engineers
(SRE) for his paper, A New Method for
Reliability Analysis of Standby Systems, which
he coauthored with Glenn Dill.

New Assembly Libraries in Relex 2009
allow users to store assemblies, together
with their component parts, for easy reuse
in future System Trees. By storing assemblies
along with key identifiers, Assembly
Libraries are fully searchable, making it
easy to find an assembly later and insert it
into a future System Tree.
An assembly library file can be comprised
of one or more assemblies, or an entire
system. To locate assemblies stored in the
library, simply browse the library, or enter
search criteria to locate an assembly based
on its identifiers.
Relex OpSim offers similar library functionality
with powerful new options for
storing and searching blocks, whole diagrams,
and maintenance tasks.
New libraries can be used with the following
Relex 2009 modules:
• FMEA
• FRACAS
• Maintainability Prediction
• Reliability Prediction
• OpSim
New in Relex 2009:
Assembly Libraries
All Relex University courses have been updated
to reflect the new features in Relex 2009. In
addition to our current Relex Fundamentals
and Relex Best Practices courses, a new
course has been added to our comprehensive
curriculum: Relex Life Data Best Practices.
