+ PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS : informing the market
One of our challenges during the year has been to inform the market about the added value and
increased importance of Automated Optical Microscopy for fine powder size and shape analysis. The
image analysis detailed results obtained on individual particles give additional information which is not
available with traditional instruments, making the Clemex PSA300 a valuable addition to the line of
particle size analysis laboratory equipment.
With this in mind, we published Application Notes and short articles in targeted magazines as well as
on our website through Newsletters. One of these Application Notes was selected as the 2009 Solution
of the Year in the microscopy category in Advanced Imaging magazine. This application proposes
a solution for measuring accurately and with unparalleled speed thousands of
microscopic carbon fibers, a few microns in diameter. Our innovation consists of
having the software measure overlapping carbon fibers individually, as opposed
to other solutions where the clusters must be broken prior to measurement, a
process that can damage the fine elongated fibers.
Carbon fibers are used as a high-tech material, offering extreme rigidity while
remaining extremely lightweight, even compared to aluminum and
magnesium. Because of these two characteristics, carbon fibers
are used in a variety of items, such as racing bicycles, and in
the aerospace industry, particularly in newer aircrafts like the
Boeing 787, the Airbus 380, and the upcoming Bombardier
C-Series jets.

+ CLEMEX CMT.HD: a new generation
In 2009, Clemex has been proud to announce the launch of a new benchmark in computerized micro
hardness testing solutions: the Clemex CMT.HD. This state-of-the-art scientific computing and imaging
alternative offers precise positioning, reproducible measurements, and enhanced productivity. Meeting
international standards such as ASTM E-384, ASTM E-140, and EN ISO 6507, the new Clemex CMT.
HD is used in metallurgical quality control labs primarily to determine the case depths in heat treated
metals in various industries such as automotive, aerospace and general metal fabricating. Traverses of
indents are made on heat treated parts to evaluate the variation of hardness within them.
The most distinctive advantage of Clemex’ instrument is that it presents a
view of the whole sample before or after the indents are made, offering
better precision in positioning the indents, and thus reducing the analysis
set-up time by half. Other advantages over the competition are the
outstanding optical resolution of our microscopy system which is fourfold
that of others, leading to ultra precise results. Finally, the instrument can
serve as a microscope for testing other standard properties of the
samples, such as grain structure and layer thickness, also a plus
over competition.

+ HEMATO PROJECT: Clemex takes the medical turn
Early 2009, Clemex decided to use its unique image analysis expertise to build microscopy based
medical devices, as year we have identified a promising opportunity for the development of a medical
instrument for hematology applications. This new automated microscopy instrument will be used for
White Blood Cell (WBC) count and qualitative Red Blood Cell (RBC) assessment, and is designed to
assist hematology laboratory professionals in hospitals, private labs, and teaching institutions.
Its purpose is to accelerate and facilitate the work of lab technicians and physicians by locating and
pre-classifying the White Blood Cells by automated image analysis, while the final classification and
validation will be done by qualified personnel. The instrument will also be able to establish a qualitative
assessment of Red Blood Cell morphology. The instrument will improve the performance of laboratories
by increasing the precision of the results, analyzing more cells than is currently possible
when using the manual method, and also by reducing the time of analysis. We
consider that the medical community is ready for this new technology and will
receive it as a valuable tool for doctors and technicians alike.
The project started in June 2009 and will be subsidized by the Canadian National
Research Council (CNRC) in the form of a half a million dollar research grant
through its Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP).
Clemex plans to have a functional instrument ready for the North American
market in 2010. We are also working in partnership with a French company,
