dangerous goods
As per Section 2 of the Transportation
of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992.
Anything that poses a risk to life,
property or the environment, such as
aerosols, solvents, paints, chainsaws,
matches, stoves, car batteries, gas
tanks and even perfume under the
right circumstances.
day
½ hr before sunrise until ½ hr after
sunset, or where the centre of the
sun's disc is less than 6° below the
horizon (just in case you’re up in the
Frozen North, where the Sun
doesn’t really set).
decision height
The height at which a missed
approach must be initiated in a
precision approach if the visual
reference to continue has not been
established.

Maintenance tasks that may be
completed by an unqualified person.
empty weight
The total weight of the airframe,
engines, fixed ballast, unusable fuel,

pre-charge fluid or that for injection
into the engines, and all installed
equipment.
Evaporation
The conversion of liquid to vapour

A person whose primary source of
income is derived from tilling the
soil, raising livestock or poultry,
dairy farming, the growing of grain,
fruit, vegetables or tobacco, or any
other operation of a similar nature.

Includes a military aerodrome.

fixed
About a light, means having a
constant luminous intensity when
observed from a fixed point.

flammable
A quality of a substance that means
it will burn. This word replaced
inflammable in the 60s.
flash point
The lowest temperature of a liquid at
which flammable vapour is given
off.
flight attendant
A crew member assigned duties in
the interest of passengers.
flight authority
A C of A, special C of A, flight
permit or validation of a foreign
document showing an aircraft's
fitness for flight, under Subpart 7 of
Part V, or a foreign C of A meeting
Art 31 of the Convention.
flight crew member
A crew member assigned as pilot or
flight engineer during flight time.
flight crew member on call
One to be available for flight duty
on notice of 1 hour or less.
flight crew member on reserve
One designated by an air operator to
be available to report for duty on
notice of more than one hour.
flight crew member on standby
One to remain at a specified location
to be available for flight duty on
notice of one hour or less.
flight deck duty time
The period spent by a crew member
at a relevant position in an aeroplane
(what about a helicopter?) during
flight time.
flight duty time
The period starting when a crew
member reports for a flight, or
standby, and finishes at engines off
or rotors stopped at the end of the
final flight, except under Subpart 4
or 5 of Part VII (commuter/airline),
in which case it ends 15 minutes
afterwards, to include any time to
complete duties assigned
beforehand, and for AME duties.
flight inspection
Operation of an aircraft for
calibrating navaids, monitoring or
evaluating their performance, or
obstacle assessment.
flight itinerary
The information to be filed under
Div III of Subpart 2 of Part VI.
flight line
A predetermined directional line of
flight within a flying display area. It
must be marked and clearly visible
from the air.
flight plan
The information to be filed under
Div III of Subpart 2 of Part VI.
flight time
From when an aircraft first moves
under its own power to take off until
it comes to rest at the end of the
flight.
flight training
A program of ground instruction
and airborne training under the flight
