That from the start of the take-off
roll to when the aeroplane reaches
the height above the runway

roll to midway between the lift-off

alternate aerodrome
One to which a flight may proceed
when landing at the destination is
inadvisable.
altimeter setting region
Low level airspace in the Designated
Airspace Handbook in which a
common altimeter setting is used.
appliance
Any instrument, mechanism,
equipment, apparatus or accessory
used (or intended to be used) in
operating or controlling an aircraft in
flight, installed in or attached to (or
intended to be) the aircraft, not part
of the airframe, engine or propeller.
appropriate frequency
The radio frequency specified by an
ATC unit or FSS for use by a PIC, a
mandatory frequency at or near an
aerodrome, or that in the Canada Air
Pilot or the Canada Flight Supplement.
apron
Part of an aerodrome (not
manoeuvring area), for loading and
unloading passengers and cargo,
refuelling, servicing, maintenance
and parking of aircraft and
movement of aircraft, vehicles and
people in relevant services.
APU
Auxiliary power unit. Any power
unit delivering rotating shaft power
or compressed air, or both, not
intended for direct propulsion of an
aircraft.
Arctic Control Area
Controlled airspace in the Northern
Domestic Airspace, as laid out in the
Designated Airspace Handbook.
ASDA
Accelerate-stop distance available. With
regard to a runway, the length of the
take-off run available plus the
stopway.
ASL
Above sea level.
ATC unit
An area control centre providing ATC
service to IFR aircraft, a terminal
control unit providing it to IFR aircraft
in the TCA, or an ATC tower
providing service at an aerodrome.
ATS or air traffic services
Includes ATC and advisory services.

One carried out as prescribed by the
Governor in Council.

A classification of balloons by

A non-power-driven lighter-than-air

The holder of a special flight
operations certificate - balloons
under 603.18.
CAME
Canadian Aviation Medical Examiner. A
physician appointed by Transport
Canada to examine the medical
fitness of candidates for issue or
revalidation of Pilot and Canadian
Civil Aviation Personnel Licences,
and who report their findings to the
Civil Aviation Medicine Division.
