REFRIGERANT
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. GENERAL
Refrigerant charging is performed by the charging valves located aft of frame C6. Access is possible through baggage compartment bottom door 242.
The refrigerant used is R 134 A (TB 05-922).
The compressor is charged at the factory with POLYOL ESTER oil, viscosity ISO 68 (TB 05-923). Only use the recommended oil.
Compressor oil level may be checked on a table, using a dispstick. Servicing practices of the vapor cycle cooling system are
- refrigerant charging - refer to 12-15-01,
- refrigerant discharging - refer to 12-15-02,
- refrigerant level - refer to 12-15-03,
- oil level - refer to 12-15-04.
2. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
R 134 A refrigerant is non-explosive, non-inflammable and non-corrosive. It has practically no odor and is heavier than air.
However, the following precautions must be observed for handling :
- at normal atmospheric pressure and temperature, it evaporates so quickly that it tends to freeze anything that it contacts.
- avoid contact with the skin and especially the eyes.
- wear safety goggles and gloves.
- the refrigerant gas is odorless and colorless and breathing may become difficult due to the lack of oxygen. Since the refrigerant gas is heavier than air and will lay close to the floor, be especially careful when handling it in small confined spaces.
