(5) The starter rotation is transmitted through the main gearbox,
horizontal driveshaft (layshaft), angle gearbox, and radial
driveshaft (towershaft) to the high pressure (N2) rotor. The N2
rotor starts to turn and establishes airflow through the engine.
When the N2 rotor speed is 15 %N2 rpm (minimum), fuel and ignition
are applied when the FUEL CONTROL switch is set to the RUN position.
(6) For ground and in-flight starts, fuel and ignition can be applied
automatically when the desired ignition system is set, setting the
ENGINE AUTOSTART switch to the "ON" position, pulling the engine
START switch out, and positioning the FUEL CONTROL switch to the RUN
position in this sequence for the applicable engine.
(7) The starter continues to help the engine until the N2 speed card
stops power to the engine START switch which holds the solenoid, and
the engine START switch goes back to the "OFF" position at
approximately 50 %N2. The start valve solenoid is de-energized,
which causes the start valve to close. The starter speed starts to
decrease when the start valve closes. As the engine continues to
increase in speed, the starter clutch automatically disengages the
starter.
(8) As the start valve closes, the light for the engine START switch
comes on. If the start valve fails to close or if electrical power
to the start valve is not stopped at approximately 50 %N2 by the N2
speed card, STARTER CUTOUT # message shows on the auxiliary EICAS
display for the applicable engine. If the message shows, air supply
can be stopped by pushing engine START switch to the "OFF" position.
NOTE: "#" denotes engine 1, 2, 3, or 4.____
(9)
The SCU disengages the autostart system at idle and will not interfere with the normal engine operation more than idle.
(10)
If the electrical circuit for the start valve fails, the start valve can be operated by use of a manual override handle machanism. For start valve manual override procedure, refer to 71-00-00/201.
(11)
The starter can be used to motor an engine. It is mecessary to motor an engine to remove trapped fuel in the engine and for other ground maintenance tasks. For engine motoring procedure, refer to 71-00-00/201.

(12) After an in-flight shutdown, if airspeed is low and starter assistance is necessary for in-flight start, an X-BLD indicator will show adjacent to the N2 indication bar on auxiliary EICAS display (or an XB indicator will show adjacent to the N2 digital display for compacted EICAS display). In addition, the in-flight start envelope which shows airstart envelope speeds for the nearest flight level at or less than the actual airplane attitude is shown on the main EICAS display below the message list. For more data on in-flight airstart displays, refer to 31-61-00, Intergrated Display System -Description and Operation.
