Open the right thrust reverser (AMM 78-31-00/201).

Examine the probe on the magnetic chip detector (MCD) for metal pieces:
(a) Remove the MCD probe and the packing from the MCD housing on
the starter.
NOTE: The MCD housing has a two part bottom which lets
____ you remove the MCD probe without oil leakage. A seal with a spring closes the opening while you remove the MCD probe.
1) Discard the packing from the MCD probe.
(b) Examine the MCD probe for a large quantity of metal pieces
(pins, lockwires, metal chips from the casting, etc.).
NOTE: You can see a small quantity of metal particles if the
____ starter has satisfactory worn areas (Fig. 602).
1) Replace the starter if metal pieces are more than 0.1 inch
(2.5 mm) in its largest dimension (AMM 80-11-01/401).
WARNING: DO NOT GET THE METHYL ETHYL KETONE (MEK) IN YOUR
_______ MOUTH OR EYES, OR ON YOUR SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM THE MEK. PUT ON A PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLE AND GLOVES WHEN YOU USE THE MEK. KEEP THE MEK AWAY FROM SPARKS, FLAME, AND HEAT. THE MEK IS A POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE SOLVENT WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DAMAGE.
2) If the metal pieces are less than 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) in its largest dimension, clean the MCD probe with the solvent. 3) Make the MCD probe dry with a clean cloth.

Install the MCD probe with the new packing:
1) Tighten the probe to 8-24 pound-inches (0.9-2.7 newton-meters).
(d)
Install a lockwire on the MCD probe.

(6) Examine the outer area of the starter for oil leakage.
(a)
If a large quantity of oil leakage is around the starter housing, replace the starter (AMM 80-11-01/401).
(b)
If a large quantity of oil leakage is around the fill plug or the overflow plug, remove the applicable plug. 1) Examine the packing of the removed plug for damage. 2) If the packing is damaged, replace the packing. 3) Install the applicable plug with the new packing.
a) Tighten the fill plug to 40-70 pound-inches (4.5-7.9 newton-meters).
