CAUTION: BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE STARTER, MAKE SURE THE NUT ON THE
_______
STARTER DRIVE COUPLING IS CORRECTLY INSTALLED. IF THE NUT IS
LOOSE, DAMAGE TO THE GEARBOX CAN OCCUR.
(1) Do these steps to examine the starter drive coupling:
(a)
Remove the cap from the main gearbox.
(b)
Look for the nut on the starter drive coupling.
(c)
If the nut is loose, look for a circular gouge or scoring on the front face of the starter output shaft.
(d)
If you find damage, you must examine the gearbox magnetic chip detector for bearing material (AMM 79-21-10/601).
(e)
If you find bearing material, replace the engine
(AMM 71-00-02/401).
(f)
If you do not find bearing material, replace the loose nut (AMM 72-61-09/401).
F. Procedure
S 424-027-N00
(1) Install the starter (Fig. 401):
NOTE: You can get access to the manual override in the starter
____ valve through the access hole in the left core cowl only when the starter, interconnect duct, and starter valve are correctly aligned.
(a)
Remove the caps from the start valve, the interconnect duct (1) and the starter (2).
(b)
Lubricate the new packing (4) with the engine oil.
(c)
Install the packing (4) on the starter drive shaft.
(d)
Apply a thin layer of grease to the splines of the starter drive shaft.
CAUTION:_______DO NOT LIFT THE STARTER BY THE DRIVE SHAFT. INTERNAL DAMAGE TO THE STARTER CAN OCCUR.
(e)
Move the starter (2) to the main gearbox.
1) Carefully move the starter forward until the splines on the starter drive coupling and the starter drive shaft engage.
(f)
Align the index pin on the QAD adapter with the index hole on the starter flange. 1) Carefully move the starter (2) forward until there is no
separation between the starter and the QAD adapter.
(g)
Install the QAD clamp (3).
1) Tighten the QAD clamp nut to 65-75 pound-inches (7.3-8.5 newton-meters).
