CENTER TANK FUEL SCAVENGE SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes with a center tank fuel scavenge system
1. General
A. This section provides a procedure for performing an operational test of the fuel scavenge system. Fuel will be transferred from the center tank into tank no. 1 during this test. Fuel quantity should be more than 10% full in the center tank and between 70 and 80% full in tank No. 1.
2. AIRPLANES PRE-SB 28-1074; Fuel Scavenge System Test
A. Equipment and Material
(1) Leading Edge Flap Actuator Locks - F80046-36.
B. Prepare Fuel Scavenge System for Test
(1)
Connect electrical power to airplane (AMM 24-22-0/201).
(2)
Extend flaps and install leading edge flap locks (AMM 27-81-0/201).
WARNING: REFER TO AMM 27-81-0/201 FOR LOCK INSTALLATION PROCEDURE. FLAPS ARE FAST ACTING AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO PERSONS.
(3)
Make sure that the engine start levers on the aisle stand are in CUTOFF position.
(4)
Make sure that the fuel quantity in tank No. 1 is between 10 and 80% full and center tank is more than 10% full.
C. Test Fuel Scavenge System.
(1)
At tank No. 1 front spar, remove the cap from fuel scavenge flow indicator/check valve (Fig. 501).
(2)
On the P5 panel, put the tank No. 1 FWD boost pump switch to ON.
(a)
Make sure that the flow indicator/check valve needle is in blue band.
(b)
To operate any of the fuel boost pumps, you must be in the flight compartment to continuously monitor the fuel quantity and the low pressure indication in the fuel tank.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE ANY FUEL BOOST PUMP IF THE LOW PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON. FUEL VAPORS IN THE TANK MAY IGNITE AND CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION.
1) Immediately put the applicable fuel boost pump switch(es) to OFF if the LOW PRESSURE light comes on and stays on.
NOTE: When defueling or transferring fuel with minimum backpressure to the pumps, it is possible for the low pressure light(s) to be on. In this case, monitor the tank quantity and put the pump switch(es) to OFF if the tank quantity is not changing.
(3)
Put the two center tank boost pump switches to ON.
(4)
Put the L CTR tank boost pump switch to OFF.
(a) Make sure the flow indicator/check valve needle is in blue band.

(5)
Put the L CTR tank boost pump switch to ON.
(6)
Put the R CTR tank boost pump switch to OFF.
(a) Make sure the flow indicator/check valve needle is in the blue band. (No fuel flow from center tank to tank No. 1 - both fuel quantity indicators remain constant.)
(7)
Put the L CTR tank boost pump switch to OFF.
(a) Make sure the flow indicator/check valve needle is in the green band. (Normal fuel flow from center tank to tank No. 1 - tank No. 1 indicator increases while center tank indicator decreases.)
(8)
Make sure the flow indicator/check valve returns to blue band in 20 ±1 minutes.
NOTE: Fuel flow from the center tank No. 1 has stopped (tank No. 1 indicator and center tank indicator remain constant).
D. Restore Airplane to Normal
(1)
Put the tank No. 1 FWD boost pump switch to OFF.
(2)
Install the cap on the flow indicator/check valve.
(3)
Remove the leading edge flap locks (AMM 27-81-0/201).
WARNING: LEADING EDGE FLAPS ARE FAST ACTING AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO PERSONS.
(4)
Remove electrical power if it is not necessary (AMM 24-22-0/201).
3. AIRPLANES POST-SB 28-1074; Fuel Scavenge System Test
A. Prepare the Fuel Scavenge System for Test
(1)
Connect electrical power to airplane (AMM 24-22-0/201).
(2)
Make sure the engine start levers on aisle stand are in CUTOFF position.
