4. Test Autothrottle
A. Self-Test (A/T BITE Test from PDC)
(1) General
(a) The standard message set up for A/T BITE is displayed on the CRT throughout the test in the following format:
A/T TEST 4-(X)
TEST *[1]
AT ENG
FLAP 0
TH IDLE STOP
*[1] PASS or FAIL is indicated here at the conclusion of each test except at the end of test 6, CMPL will appear instead of PASS.
(b)
There are twelve (12) A/T BITE tests identified as A, B, C, D, E, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
(c)
The BITE test sequence occurs in the order given in step (b). It is not possible to skip or override any of the twelve tests.
(d)
There will be a blank on PASS or FAIL location on CRT during each test indicating that test is in process.
(e)
If A/T will not enter BITE, verify squat switch is down (LANDING GEAR - LIGHTS circuit breaker on P6-2 panel is closed), thrust lever LVDT's are at idle (thrust levers full aft), and gear switch is down (landing gear position lever is in the DOWN position).
(f)
Once the A/T BITE test is initiated, continue through the entire A/T BITE test sequence even if FAILS are indicated. When a test fail is indicated, make a note of the test that failed. If there is a FAIL of test A, B, C, or 3, make a note of the test fail code that appears in the hexadecimal display window on the front of the Autothrottle Computer, and then proceed with the test. The test fail code may be useful in troubleshooting.
(g)
The following sequence describes each A/T BITE Test which are listed in the order they occur. The center column gives the PDC CDU legend that is displayed with each

test.
Test A – Computer Check (A/T COMPUTER) – Checks computer internals.
Test B – Throttle Position (TH.POS.SENS) – Checks for compatibility of received signal with a fixed idle value.
Test C – Throttle Servo (TH. SERVO) – Verifies output response to a command input. Sense and Scaling.
Test D – PDC – Checks ARINC 429 receiver update rate.
Test E – Flap Position Sensor (FLAP POSN) – Verifies a specific (0 deg.) Flap Angle.
Test 0 – Longitudinal Accelerometer (LONG ACCEL) – Checks a specific (0.37g) Signal via Test Coil during test.
Test 1 – ALPHA VANE – Checks for an input signal.
Test 2 – Radio Altimeter (RAD ALT) – Checks for a signal equivalent to Airplane on Ground, 0 feet altitude.
Test 3 – EPR XMTR – Verifies 1.0 EPR.
Test 4 – Air Data Computer (ARINC DATA) – Checks ARINC 429 Receiver Update Rate.
Test 5 – Autopilot (A/P) – Checks ARINC 429 bus from AFCS control panel.
Test 6 – Mode Indication (MODE ANN.F/S) – Tests Mode Annunciator Indications and Fast Slow.

(h) The following describes TEST FAIL codes for A/T BITE tests A, B, C and 3. Tests D thru 2 and 4 thru 6 provide pass (P) or fail (F) indications only.
Test A 0 CPU Test Fail
1 PROM Fail
2 D to A Converter Fail
3 A to D Converter Fail
4 Discrete Input Fail
5 Discrete Output Fail
6 Thrust Lever Hold Fail or A/T Engage/Disengage Switch Fail
7 ARINC 429 Cards Fail
Test B 1 Left Thrust Lever Position Out-of-Tolerance
2 Right Thrust Lever Position Out-of-Tolerance
Test C 1 Left Autothrottle Servo Fail
2 Right Autothrottle Servo Fail
Test 3 1 Left EPR Signal Fail
2 Right EPR Signal Fail
Example: For a right EPR signal failure the Hexadecimal display will show:
3 - F - 2 - 3 - F - 2 - 3 - F - 2 . . . . etc.
Where 3 is the test identifier, F indicates FAIL and 2 is the fail code.
