AFCS MODE CONTROL PANEL - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
EFFECTIVITY
SA ZS-SIA and on GJ B-2509 and B-2510
1. General
A. The AFCS mode control panel is installed on the glareshield above center instrument panel P2. The panel contains ten pushbutton switches which are internally illuminated. Each pushbutton switch contains two replaceable bulbs. The pushbutton switches have hinged lens caps which can be opened to replace lamps.
2. Switch Relamping Procedure
A. Equipment and Materials
(1) Lamp Replacement Tool - P/N 4066608, Honeywell Inc., Sperry Commercial Flight Systems Group, Phoenix, AZ
B. Procedure
(1)
Remove electrical power to MCP by opening AFCS system A, AFCS System B and Autothrottle System DC circuit breakers. Open VOR STBY circuit breaker (if installed).
CAUTION: LAMP REPLACEMENT WITH POWER APPLIED TO MODE CONTROL PANEL CAN DAMAGE MODE CONTROL PANEL LAMP DRIVER CIRCUITS.
(2)
Insert small flat-blade screwdriver of the lamp replacement tool into slot on either side of pushbutton switch lens cap and pull switch/lamp assembly out of the MCP. Pry open hinged lens cap.
CAUTION: SCRATCHES ON ADJACENT EDGELIGHT PANEL CAN CAUSE LIGHT LEAKS AND EDGELIGHT PANEL DAMAGE. DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE FORCE.
(3)
Remove lamp from slot in switch assembly and replace with correct type (No. 6839) 28-volt replacement lamp using the lamp replacement tool.
CAUTION: INSTALLATION OF INCORRECT LAMP CAN DAMAGE LAMP DRIVER CIRCUITS.
(4)
Close hinged switch lens cap and push switch/lamp assembly back into the MCP.
(5)
Close circuit breakers opened in step (1).
(6)
Perform BITE Test of pushbutton switch lights.
(a)
Select PDC CDU to autopilot BITE by selecting STBY, pressing RCL, (-) then selecting page 5 (autopilot BITE).
(b)
Select YES (ENG) to SYMPTOM/PIREP; YES to autopilot; NO (ENT) to ENG INTLK; NO to APPROACH; NO to STAB TRIM; NO to PITCH A/P; YES to ROLL A/P. This selects HEADING test No. 17. Select desired channel to be tested.

(d)
Follow instructions to provide system diagnostic routine if a BITE fails. Replace indicated component and recycle system thru BITE until system passes.
(e)
Remove electrical power if no longer required.
3. Mode Control Panel Cleaning Procedure
A. General
(1) Normally a minimum amount of cleaning is necessary for removal of oil, grease, dust, and dirt accumulations.
B. Equipment and Materials
(1)
Isopropyl alcohol - Commercially available
(2)
Lens tissue - Part No. 5459C0217, Honeywell Inc., Sperry Commercial Flight Group, Phoenix, AZ; K-LENS-M, No. 630, The Williams Co. Inc., Cortland, NY; Techclean Wipers, Stock No. 1705, Tech Spray Inc., Amarillo, TX
(3)
Cotton swab - Commercially available
(4)
Soft, natural-bristle brush - Commercially available
(5)
Compressed air - Dry, low-pressure (20 psi max) with either an air ionizing gun attachment or an air ionizing nozzle - Commercially available
C. Procedure
(1)
Remove light dirt and dust accumulations from external surfaces of the MCP using compressed air or a clean, soft-bristle brush.
CAUTION: TO AVOID DAMAGE OF ELECTROSTATIC SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT, ENSURE THAT THE COMPRESSED AIR OUTLET HOSE HAS EITHER AN AIR IONIZING GUN ATTACHMENT OR AN AIR IONIZING NOZZLE WHICH NEUTRALIZES A POTENTIAL ELECTRONIC CHARGE CREATED BY THE AIRFLOW.
(2)
Remove heavy oil and grease accumulations from external surfaces of the MCP using cotton swab dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
CAUTION: AVOID EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL THAT CAN HARM MOISTURE SENSITIVE COMPONENTS.
NOTE: Test the isopropyl alcohol before use to ensure that it is not damaging to painted surfaces of HEA coatings on glass filters. The isopropyl alcohol should be fast evaporating to avoid moisture migration into critical components. Never apply solvent directly to any surface of the MCP.
(3) Remove dust, dirt, oil and grease accumulations from the LCD displays and edge-lighted panel using optical grade lens tissue.
CAUTION: NO LIQUID CLEANING AGENTS SHOULD BE USED IN CLEANING THE LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAYS (LCD) TO AVOID MOISTURE CONTAMINATION INSIDE THE LCD MODULES.
