[4] The DFDR consists of a flight recorder, position sensors, a digital
flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU), a flight recorder module and
control panels served for the recorder. Data from the sensors is sent to the
DFDAU where it is processed and sent to the flight recorder for storage.
The flight recorder has recording capability of 25 hours ( most recent 25
hours). The outer case of the DFDR is a stainless steel box, it provides
protection during handling of the unit and in case of an accident
involving fire, impact and crash. To assist in recovering the recorder in
event of an accident, the box is painted international orange with large
black letters painted on the left or right sides such as "FLIGHT
RECORDER DO NOT OPEN". In addition, reflective strips are added on
the box to further aid recovery. (The DFDR is called " black box" in
Chinese only, its actual color is orange) Figure 43-2 shows the DFDR.
The DFDR is 1/2 ATR long and weighs 27 pounds (12.3kg).
Fig 43-2 Digital Flight Data Recorder
There is a connector on the front of the recorder for connecting to test
equipment. This connector can also be used to retrieve data from the
flight recorder using portable or shop equipment . The underwater
locating device (ULD) emits ultrasonic output upon immersion in either
fresh or salt water.
[5] The digital flight data acquisition unit receives the flight parameter
from various airplane sensors, processes the signals, convert them into a
standard digital format and transmits the output to the DFDR for
recording. This unit is a 6 MCU size 115 volts, single-phase, ac power
for operating.
[6] Figure 43-3 illustrates the flight recorder module.
Fig. 43-3 Flight recorder module
This module shows the flight crew flight recorder operation, and
provides a ground test capability. The amber OFF lamp comes on when
the flight recorder is off or when the BITE circuitry detects a failure in
the flight data recorder or DFDAU. A test switch allows flight recorder
system test when the airplane is on the ground and engines not running.
The switch may be placed in the TEST position for data retrieval. A
guard prevents inadvertent positioning of the switch.
[7] The position sensors (including aileron position sensor, rudder
position sensor, horizontal stabilizer position sensor, elevator position
sensor, control column position sensor, control wheel position sensor,
and rudder pedal position sensor. ) detect changes in the position of
various flight controls and control surfaces. The sensors continually send
this data to the flight recorder system. The position sensors are synchro
transmitter devices that act as transducers converting mechanical
movement into a proportional electrical output. Detailed instructions for
removal, installation, and adjustment of the sensors are located in chapter
31 of maintenance manual.
