The LNAV command originate within the FMC and are processed in the
FCC. The normal flight path starts on the runway, therefore , the airplane
is on the active flight plan path. Figure 39-2 shows a normal capture, the
airplane flies to the active leg at an intercept angle of less than 90
degrees. The message "NOT ON INTERCEPT HEADING " appears on
the FMC CDU scratch pad to alert the pilot to correct the heading when
the airplane is not on a correct intercept. If LNAV is engaged while on an
intercept heading, the A/P commands are based on that heading to
capture the active leg.
C. Arrival preparation --------- approach preparations for the LNAV
mode should be completed before reaching the last waypoint in the flight
plan. Apaaroach preparations consist of selecting or entering the
approach procedures on the FMCS CDU and pressing EXEC (execute
key) . FMC commands cause the airplane to arrive at the optimum
localizer capture point with the correct intercept angle.
D. Approach preparation -------- tune both VHF NAV receivers (manual
frequency selector) to the ILS frequency. Select the inbound course on
both course displays. Press the APP MODE SWITCH on the MCP. The
LNAV and APP mode switches are illuminated. LNAV and VOR/LOC
(ARM) are anunciated. The A/P is now armed for the approach but
continues to command LNAV guidance.
E. Localizer mode -------- Mode logic conditions in the A/P determine
the optimum capture point relative to the localizer beam based on preset
course error and beam error rate. At localizer capture, LNAV is
disengaged and the LNAV mode switch extinguishes. LNAV
annunciation disappears and VOR/LOC (ARM) changes to
VOR/LOC( CAPT).

[1] VNAV is a vertical guidance mode of operation for the DFCS.
vertical flight profile guidance is supplied from the FMCS based on the
navigation and the performance data bases and the active flight plan.
VNAV is normally used with the A/P but is also available for F/D
guidance.

Figure 40-1 illustrates an example of the climb phase:
A. Initial condition ------- after TAKEOFF, LNAV and VNAV are
pressed to engage the FMC for lateral and vertical guidance. Only the
VNAV mode is discribed.
B. Climb one --------- after engaging LNAV and VNAV, engage the A/P
to CMD. Target speed is given by FMC, and the airspeed cursor on
MASI is driven to FMC target speed.
C. Level off at MCP altitude ------- If the MCP altitude is below the
FMCS cruise altitude, the A/P acquires and holds the MCP altitude. An
altitude alert system provides the pilots with a visual and aural alert when
the airplane at the approach of the MCP altitude. The altitude alert
system also provides a warning if the airplane departs from the MCP
altitude. Approach altitude alerting consists of an aural tone and steady
illumination of the alert lights when the airplane has approached within
900 feet of MCP altitude. The alert lights remain until 300 feet, at which
time they extinguish. The ALT ACQ mode is a transition mode between
climb or descent and altitude hold. To reduce altitude overshoot, entry
