TEXT
[1] The weather radar (WXR) system provides the flight crew with a display of
moisture-laden weather formations or of major terrain features.
The weather radar system transmits radio frequency (rf) pulses in a 180-degree
arc forward of the airplane. Rainfall or terrain features reflect the pulses back to
the airplane and are processed . The time between the transmission and the
reception of these returns will determine the rainfall or terrain range while the
antenna position determines the azimuth.

[2] The weather radar returns are shown on EHSI. For rainfall returns, the
amplitude depends on the rainfall intensity. This allows the system to show
areas of various weather conditions using different colors. For terrain returns,
the amplitude depends on the characteristics of the ground surface. This allows
the system to show the shape of major ground features.
[3] A weather radar system consists of a receiver/transmitter (R/T), an antenna,
control panels and indicators (EHSI). The WXR control panel provides mode
selection, antenna tilt control and system gain control. The control panel also
allows for the selection of antenna stabilization and ground clutter suppression.
A microprocessor within the control panel converts each switch position into a
digital format and transimts the data to the transceiver using an ARINC 429 data
bus.

 GAIN
The system gain may be adjusted in the WX, WX+T, or MAP modes by the
GAIN control. The control has ten detented positions including the CAL
position, where the system gain is automatically calibrated.
 TILT
The antenna tilt position is controlled by the TILT control. The tilt range is
from 15 down to 15 up.
 WX
Pushing the WX pushbutton switches the R/T unit to the weather mode, and
weather data will be shown on the EHSI.
 WX+T
Pushing the WX+T pushbutton switches the R/T unit to the weather plus
turbulence mode, and turbulence as well as weather data will be shown on the
EHSI . The turbulence mode is active only if a range of 40 NM (nautical mile)
or less is selected on the EFIS control panel.If a range greater than 40 NM is
selected, only weather data will be shown.
