TEXT
[1] The voice recorder system is installed to provide a continuous record
of the last 30 minutes of flight crew communications and conversations.
The voice recorder receives sound from the flight compartment and all
audio signals. Sensing of the " airplane on ground" and " parking brake
set " is used to permit bulk erasure of the voice recording. Figure 43-1
shows the voice recorder control panel.

This panel allows remote monitoring and testing of the voice recorder
unit, detects flight compartment sounds and conversations, and controls
bulk erasure of the recording tape.
The area microphone senses flight compartment audio.
Pressing the ERASE switch for a minimum 2 seconds erases the tape,
provided that the airplane is on the ground and the parking brake is
set.
Pressing the TEST switch tests all 4 recording channels in sequence.
The meter indicates green during TEST.
The HEADSET jack is used to monitor all 4 recorded channel.
[2] The voice recorder contains a shock and heat resistant capsule that
encloses a tape transport mechanism which is loaded with a polymer base
tape. The recorder also contains electronics, test controls, and monitor
circuitry. The unit is contained in a 1/2 ATR short case and weights 23.9
pounds. An underwater locator beacon is mounted vertically on the front
face of the recorder. The underwater locator beacon is a battery-operated
acoustical beacon that is activated when the unit is submerged in water.
The unit provides a usable signal for 30 days. A battery replacement date
decal is located on the device.
[3] The digital flight data recorder system (DFDR) provides airlines and
government agencies with a record of flight parameters, these parameters
reflect the information on flight conditions and airplane systems
operation. This information is used for the analysis of flight conditions in
the event of a crash or accident. The mandatory parameters recorded in
the flight data recorder are as follows:
