▵h ▵ 40 × 3 × 100 = 12 000 ft.
• The pilot should not attempt to penetrate a cell or clear its top by less than 5 000 ft vertical,
because otherwise the aircraft may encounter severe turbulence.
If the top of cell is at or above 25 000 ft, overflying should be avoided due to the possibility
of encountering turbulence stronger than expected.
In the same way, the pilot should avoid flying under a thunderstorm because of possible
windshear, microbursts, severe turbulence, or hail.
Turbulence mode
• The turbulence detection mode is most effective when the ND is set on 40 nm and the
antenna is tilted to avoid ground return.
• When examining areas of heavy rainfall in WX+T mode, the flight crew should adjust
antenna tilt frequently, because turbulence areas vary with the altitude.
• Closely spaced (or thin lines between) color gradations are usually associated with severe
turbulence.
FLIGHT INSTRUMENT TOLERANCES
Applicable to:
The values below apply to aircraft in symmetrical flight (no sideslip), in clean configuration, and in
straight and level flight.
ALTITUDE TOLERANCES :
PFD 1 or PFD 2 at ground ‐ check : plus or minus 25 ft
‐ STBY ALTI at ground check : plus or minus 300 ft
Note: On the ground, the vibrator of the standby altimeter is off. That is why the standby
altimeter tolerance value is high. In flight, the vibrator is on and the value is lower.
