IGNITION - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
______________________________________________
1. General
_______ (Ref. Fig. 001) The ignition system consists of 2 independent systems : 2 high energy ignition exciters for which the energization is controlled by the ECU, 2 spark igniters, and 2 coaxial shielded ignition leads. The purpose of the system is :
- to produce an electrical spark to ignite the fuel air/mixture in the
engine combustion chamber during the starting cycle on ground and in
flight.
- to provide continuous ignition (manual or automatic selection) during takeoff, landing and operation in adverse weather conditions or EIU failed.
Each ignition system is alternately selected by the ECU for each starting sequence in order to have no failure of an ignition channel for more than one flight and to increase overall system life.
2. Description
___________
A. Ignition Exciters The 2 ignition exciters are mounted on shock dampened brackets on the outer surface of the fan case. Each exciter has an input connector and an output connector.
B. Spark Igniters The 2 spark igniters are mounted into bosses at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions on the outer surface of the combustion case. The inner tip extends through ferrules in the outer liner of the combustion chamber.
C. Ignition Leads The ignition leads are constructed of insulated wire in a sealed flexible conduit having a copper inner braid and a nickel outer braid. The leads connect the spark igniters to the output connectors of the ignition exciters. The aft ends of the leads, from the tube bundle junction box to the spark igniters, are cooled by fan discharge air passing through the lead conduit (the ignition system cooling is described in ref. 75-27-00).
3. Operation
_________ (Ref. Fig. 002) The ignition exciters operate with 115V(105-122V)-400Hz input. The power is transformed, rectified and discharged in the form of capacitor discharge pulses through the ignition leads to the spark igniters. Each engine circuit is capable of independent operation and is selected by ENG/MASTER 1 (2) control lever in the cockpit center pedestal.
