737-600/700/800/900 AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
General
The ELEC HYD PUMP switches on the hydraulic panel control
the electric motor-driven pumps (EMDPs). A protection circuit
turns the electric motor off when a ground fault or overcurrent is
detected.
Pump Control
When the ELEC HYD PUMP switch is ON, 28v dc energizes the
electric hydraulic pump relay which closes three contacts.
These contacts let 115v ac power go to the EMDP electric motor.
When the ELEC HYD PUMP switch is in the OFF position, the
electric hydraulic pump relay has no power and the contacts
open to stop the EMDP motor.
The EMDP hydraulic pump relay gets a ground through the
EMDP connector. Contacts in the hydraulic pump relay control
115v ac power to the EMDP.
The EMDP OVERHEAT light gets a ground through the
temperature switch on the EMDP. When the temperature of
the pump is normal, the temperature switch is open. This
removes the ground to the OVERHEAT light on the hydraulic
control panel. When the temperature of the EMDP increases to
more than 235F (113C), the temperature switch closes. This
provides a ground to turn the OVERHEAT light on. The
temperature switch resets when the EMDP temperature
decreases to less than 185F (85C).
Circuit Protection
The ELEC HYD PUMP switches get 28v dc power from the
ground fault detectors. The ground fault detector for system A
EMDP is in the P92 power distribution panel in the EE
compartment. The ground fault detector for system B EMDP is
in the P91 panel in the electronics equipment compartment.
The ground fault detector has these components:
* Trip coil
* Reset switch.
The trip coil in the ground fault detector energizes in these two
conditions:
* Ground fault
* Overcurrent.
If a ground fault occurs and the detector gets an input
differential of 2 to 4 amps or more between two coils, the trip
coil energizes.
If an overcurrent occurs and the detector gets an input
overcurrent of 80 - 90 amps from any one 115v ac phase, the
trip coil energizes.
When the trip coil energizes, the electric hydraulic pump relay
has no power and the hydraulic pump relay contacts open to
stop 115v ac power to the EMDP.

Training Information Point
You can replace the ground fault detector without replacement
of the power distribution panel.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUSH THE RESET SWITCH ON THE
GROUND FAULT DETECTOR BEFORE YOU
DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FROM
THE EMDP.
Push the reset switch on the ground fault detector to move the
trip coil contacts to their normal position.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT
ARE CLEAR OF ALL CONTROL SURFACES
BEFORE YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
AILERONS, RUDDERS, ELEVATORS, FLAPS,
SPOILERS, LASTS, AND THRUST REVERSERS
CAN MOVE QUICKLY WHEN YOU SUPPLY
HYDRAULIC POWER. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY
TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
