move the flap bypass motor-operated valve to the bypass
position. This prevents a hydraulic lock on the hydraulic motor
and permits the electric motor to operate.
Extend
When you move and hold the alternate flaps control switch in
the DOWN position, the alternate flap down relay energizes.
This lets the TE flap electric motor receive electrical power. The
electric motor moves the TE flaps until you release the switch or
move it to the OFF position. This stops the operation of the
electric motor.
When the TE flaps move to the down position limit, the flap
down switch deenergizes the alternate flap down relay. This
also stops the operation of the electric motor. The flap down
limit is at the flap 40 position.
It takes approximately 2 minutes and 39 seconds for the TE flaps
to fully extend during the alternate operation.
Retract
Retraction of the TE flaps is almost the same as extension,
except you do not need to hold the control switch in the UP
position. The flap up limit is at the flap up position.
It takes approximately 2 minutes and 39 seconds for the TE flaps
to fully retract during the alternate operation.
Training Information Point
During extension in the alternate operation, the LE devices use
hydraulic power to extend. During retraction in the alternate
operation, the LE devices do not retract.
NOTE: The standby hydraulic pump motor operates when the
alternate flap arm switch is in the ARM position.

General
The FSEU can help you find and isolate a failure in the TE flap
system and the LE flap and slat system. Front panel BITE on the
FSEU lets you interface with the BITE functions in the FSEU.
The FSEU has a 6-switch BITE panel. These are the functions of
each switch:
* ON/OFF: to start or stop BITE display
* MENU: to display menu
* YES or NO: in response to question
* Down arrow or up arrow: to scroll through menu or results.
NOTE: If you do not push a switch on the FSEU BITE panel
within 5 minutes, the FSEU stops the BITE function and
turns off the display.
These are the items in the main menu of the FSEU BITE:
* EXISTING FAULTS?
* FAULT HISTORY?
* GROUND TESTS?
* OTHER FUNCTNS?.
EXISTING FAULTS?
The EXISTING FAULTS? selection shows existing faults in the
system, and does a check of the interfaces to the FSEU.
FAULT HISTORY?
The FAULT HISTORY? selection shows past faults by flight leg.
This fault information is in the non-volatile memory (NVM) in the
FSEU.
GROUND TESTS?
The GROUND TESTS? selection lets you do these tests:
* TE flap asymmetry-skew-indication test
* TE flap load relief test
* FSEU BITE display test.
OTHER FUNCTNS?
The OTHER FUNCTNS? selection lets you do these functions:
* Change FSEU output discretes
* See sensor information
* Erase faults.

Existing Faults
The existing faults test shows existing faults and does a check
of the interfaces to the FSEU.
To do the existing faults test, do these steps:
* Go to the main menu
* Use the up or down arrow switches until you see EXISTING
FAULTS? in the BITE display
* Push the YES switch.
NOTE: When you turn on the FSEU BITE display, the first
message you see is EXISTING FAULTS?.
During this test, the lights for the LE devices in the flight
compartment show for approximately five seconds.
