When the speedbrake lever is in the flight detent, flight spoilers
4, 5, 8, and 9 move to 24.5 degrees. When the speedbrake lever
is at the UP position, these spoilers move to a maximum of 38
degrees.
The spoiler mixer mixes the control wheel input with the
speedbrake lever input. The ratio changer decreases the
movement caused by the control wheel as the speedbrake lever
moves up.
See the speedbrake control system section for more
information. (SECTION 27-62)

General
The flight crew uses the speedbrake lever to manually move the
ground spoilers. The auto speedbrake actuator automatically
controls them. The ground spoilers only move when the
speedbrake lever moves while the airplane is on the ground.
Manual Operation
The speedbrake lever gives mechanical input through the
speedbrake forward drum and lever brake to the spoiler mixer
and ratio changer. The spoiler mixer mechanically moves the
ground spoiler control valve. The ground spoiler control valve
sends hydraulic system A pressure to the ground spoiler
interlock valve. A cable from the right main landing gear torsion
links moves the ground spoiler interlock valve when the
airplane is on the ground. The ground spoiler interlock valve
then sends hydraulic power to the ground spoiler actuators,
which move all the ground spoilers. There is one actuator for
each outboard ground spoiler and two actuators for each
inboard ground spoiler.
There is no manual reversion for the ground spoilers.
The speedbrake lever position sensor sends data to the flight
data acquisition unit (FDAU) for the flight data recorder.
These components send data to the proximity switch
electronics unit (PSEU):
* Speedbrake lever position switch
* Speedbrake takeoff warning switch
* Ground spoiler interlock valve proximity sensor
* Ground spoiler interlock valve pressure switch.
The PSEU uses this data for takeoff warning and for the
SPEEDBRAKES EXTENDED light.
The ground spoiler interlock valve proximity sensor and
pressure switch both send signals to the FDAU for flight data
recording.
See the flight data recording system (FDRS) section for more
information about the FDAU. (SECTION 31-31)
Automatic Operation
The auto speedbrake module controls the automatic operation
of the speedbrakes. The auto speedbrake module uses data
from these sources:
* Speedbrake arming switch
* Speedbrake refused takeoff switch
* Antiskid/autobrake control unit (AACU)
* Air/ground relays (2)
* Antiskid sense relays (2)
* Autothrottle switches (2).

The auto speedbrake module sends commands through relays
to the auto speedbrake actuator during landings and refused
takeoffs. The auto speedbrake actuator moves the speedbrake
forward drum and lever brake. This causes the speedbrake
lever to move. The input to the spoiler mixer and ratio changer
is the same as the manual operation. This causes all the ground
spoilers to move up, and a signal sent to the FDAU.
Indications
The auto speedbrake module controls the amber SPEEDBRAKE
DO NOT ARM light and the green SPEEDBRAKE ARMED light.
The SPEEDBRAKE ARMED light shows when the automatic
operation of the speedbrake system arms correctly. The
SPEEDBRAKE DO NOT ARM light shows when the automatic
operation of the speedbrake system does not arm correctly.
The auto speedbrake module also sends signals to the FDAU
for flight data recording, when the SPEEDBRAKE DO NOT
ARMED or SPEEDBRAKE ARMED lights are on.
See the flight data recording system (FDRS) section for more
information about the FDAU. (SECTION 31-31)
The PSEU controls the amber SPEEDBRAKES EXTENDED light.
This light comes on if the speedbrakes operate during
