motor. When energized, the motor moves the valve.
Each valve has a manual override/position indicator lever with
positions 1 and 2. When the valve opens, the indicator moves to
position 1. When the valve closes, the indicator moves to
position 2.
Operation
The flight spoiler shutoff valves are normally open to permit
pressure to each flight spoiler. When you move the spoiler
system A shutoff switch (SPOILER A) to the OFF position, the
system A flight spoiler shutoff valve closes. This stops the
system A hydraulic power to the flight spoiler actuators for
spoilers 2, 4, 9 and 11. When you move the switch to the ON
position, the valve opens.
The system B flight spoiler shutoff valve operates the same as
the system A flight spoiler shutoff valve. It stops the system B
hydraulic power to the flight spoiler actuators for spoilers 3, 5, 8,
and 10.
Training Information Point
The flight controls shutoff valves and the spoiler shutoff valves
are interchangeable.
You can replace the valve and motor as a unit or you can
replace just the motor.

Purpose
The flight spoilers help control the roll of the airplane.
Location
Each spoiler has a number, 1 through 12 (from left to right).
There are four flight spoilers on each wing. The flight spoilers
are at the fixed trailing edge of the wings, between the engine
struts and the ailerons.
Physical Description
The flight spoilers have aluminum skins with an aluminum
honeycomb core. The flight spoilers are not interchangeable.
Functional Description
The flight spoilers operate in the air and on the ground. They
use inputs from the control wheel and the speedbrake lever.
The flight spoilers start to move up when the control wheel turns
or when the speedbrake lever moves more than the ARMED
detent. The flight spoilers are at their maximum positions when
the control wheel turns more than 70 degrees or when the
speedbrake lever moves to the UP position.
Flight spoilers 2, 3, 10, and 11 move up a maximum of 33
degrees. Flight spoilers 4, 5, 8, and 9 move up a maximum of 38
degrees.
Training Information Point
When you rig the spoilers, keep a small gap between the spoiler
and the TE flap.
When you do maintenance around the spoilers, obey this
warning:
WARNING: DO NOT PUT A PART OF YOUR BODY BETWEEN
THE SPOILER AND THE WING UNLESS YOU
REMOVE THE HYDRAULIC POWER. THE
SPOILERS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.

Purpose
The spoiler position transmitters send spoiler position data to
digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU).
See the flight data recorder system section for more information
on the DFDAU. (SECTION 31-31)
Location
The two spoiler position transmitters are on the wing rear spar
below spoilers 3 and 10. To get access, extend the TE flaps or
move the spoilers up.
Physical Description
Each spoiler position transmitter has an internal synchro that
uses 28v ac excitation power at a frequency of 400 Hz (14v AC at
1800 Hz).
Training Information Point
During installation of a spoiler position transmitter, make sure
the index mark on the shaft aligns with the slot in the input
crank.
To do a check of the transmitter adjustment of the spoiler
position transmitters, you must use a test unit.
The spoiler position transmitters are similar to the spoiler
position sensors that are below spoilers 4 and 9. The difference
