Business and General Aviation are not necessarily luxury items. Pat Malone reveals some of the benefits on offer

" If you're serious
about doing
business in Europe,
Business Aviation
is the first thing to
think about"

Back in the 1980s, after the European Union had been enlarged to 12 coun¬tries, London art dealer Robert Noortman set out to show how Business Aviation (BA) should operate in Europe. Starting from the UK at 3am, he flew his Cessna Citation jet to every one of those 12 countries — ending up in Brussels 18 hours later. The cities he chose to visit were those in which he did business: Brest in France; Vigo in Spain; Alghero in Sardinia; Maastricht in the Netherlands. Later, he worked out that on the scheduled airlines, the journey would have taken him seven days, involved 28 changes of plane and protracted ground travel.
Seven days on the road would have been exhausting and expensive for Noortman and two of his executives; salaries, fares, living expenses and hotel bills would have added up to significantly more than the direct operating costs of the Citation — an aircraft which, when Noortman wasn't using it, was leased out to other companies at a profit. "If you're serious about doing business in Europe," Noortman said, "Business Aviation is the first thing to think about."
Much has changed in BA since the 1980s, all of it for the better. Aircraft are cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient.

Navigation systems that were then con¬fined to large commercial jets now fit into the palm of the hand. GPS equipment, coupled with capable autopilots, is com¬mon even in small piston-engine aircraft, and en-route delays have been cut.
