The future: creation of a single European sky >>
Integrating GA and BA into
the future ATM system
Everybody must prepare for the future Air Traffic Management environment proposed by the Single European Sky. But are the burdens too great for General and Business Aviation Christina Mackenzie reports
0bviously, Air Traffic Man¬agement (ATM) must take into account everything that is in the air — and that includes the Business Aviation (BA) and the General Aviation (GA) communities. If you didn't integrate these it would be much like laying out driving rules that excluded everyone, save lorry drivers. The rules cover both the technological and regulatory aspects of flying.
General and Business Aviation together make up a vast sector, encompassing recreational flying with non-powered aircraft to high-performance business jets. According to the latest EUR0C0N¬TR0L figures, the number of business
jets registered between 2005 and 2007 in Europe rose 70 per cent, from 1,100 to nearly 1,900. This growth provides "a real challenge for airports and Air Traffic Control across Europe," says Dr David Marsh, manager of the STATF0R Service at EUR0C0NTR0L, because although BA uses different airports it happens "mostly in the same densely used airspace as
the rest of the traffic". In addition, BA is concentrated in six countries: France with 16.6 per cent of departures; the
UK, 13.8 per cent; Germany, 13 per cent; Italy, 10.2 per cent; Switzerland, 7.4 per cent; and Spain, 6.1 per cent.
Although BA was among the first to
feel the onset of the recession in 2008, it remains a significant segment of traffic, about 8 per cent of the total. Also, despite technological developments, GA and
BA have an impact on the environment, and, like commercial airliners or all other means of transport, they must minimise these impacts.
