— CAUTION —
DO NOT BEND THE HIGH TENSION LEAD OF THE COIL.

17.
Connect condenser wire to slip terminal on point assembly, attaching with the lead pointing left.

18.
Align the L or R (depending on magneto rotation) mark on rotor gear so it points toward high tension lead of coil.

19.
Align L or R (depending on magneto rotation) mark on distributor gear with L or R mark on distributor block and insert timing pin (T-118) through block into gear.

20.
Fit distributor housing to frame, making sure bosses of distributor housing are seated in slots of frame. Start by fitting top boss (next to vent) and assemble distributor housing into place.

21.
Secure distributor housing to frame with four screws and four lock washers. Tighten to a torque of 24 inch-pounds and remove timing pin.

INTERNAL TIMING.
1.  
When installing new or adjusting breaker points and before timing magneto to engine, internal timing of magneto must be correct.

2.  
Find number one tower, as follows:


— Note —
No need to spark out these magnetos.

a.  
Insert T- 118 timing pin in L or R hole in distributor block (depending on rotation of magneto).

b.  
Gently turn rotor opposite rotation of magneto until pin engages gear.

c.  
If pin is binding and will not go in hole in gear, you have hit the pointer on the gear. Pull pin out. enough to continue opposite rotation until pointer has passed, re-insert pin.

d.  
When pin sticks through hole in gear about 0.25 inch, number one cylinder is ready to fire.

e.  
After magneto is installed, remove timing pin. Magneto is ready to be timed to engine.


INSTALLATION AND TIMING MAGNETO TO ENGINE.
1.  Install magnetos and time to engine as follows:
— WARNING —
BE SURE SWITCH IS IN OFF POSITION AND P LEAD IS GROUNDED.

a.  
Remove top spark plug from number one cylinder. Place a thumb over spark plug hole and turn engine crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until compression stroke is reached. (Indicated by positive pressure on thumb.) In this position both valves of number one cylinder are closed. Turn crankshaft opposite to its normal direction of rotation until it is approximately 35 degrees BTDC on compression stroke of number one cylinder. Rotate crankshaft in its normal direction of rotation until 25 degrees mark on starter ring gear and hole in starter housing align. (Figure 74-9)

b.  
If magneto is already installed on engine, scribe a reference mark on the magneto mounting flange and engine accessory case. Loosen the magneto mounting bolts. Skip to sub-para d.

c.  
If magneto is being installed on engine, insert T-118 timing pin in L or R hole in distributor block. Gently turn rotor opposite rotation of magneto until pin engages gear, install magneto and gasket on mounting pad of accessory housing, and remove timing pin.  Tighten bolts finger tight.

d.  
Connect standard timing light between engine ground and left magneto condenser terminal. Switch must be ON.


— WARNING —
DO NOT ROTATE PROPELLOR (OR ENGINE) WHEN SWITCH IS ON. MAGNETOS WILL FIRE THE ENGINE IF PROPELLOR (OR ENGINE) IS ROTATED.
e.  
Rotate complete magneto in the direction of normal magneto rotation on engine mounting until timing light (or audible signal) indicates contact breaker points are open. Slowly rotate magneto in the opposite direction until the timing light goes out (or audible signal goes off). If magneto is being installed/reinstalled, skip to sub-para g.

f.  
If magneto is already installed on engine, measure distance between the scribed mark on the engine accesory case and the corresponding mark on the magneto mounting flange. If distance is greater than 0.125 inch, remove magneto and inspect/adjust contact breaker points. (0.125 inch equals a 5° change in internal magneto timing.)

g. h  Secure magneto in this position. Torque bolts to 17 foot-pounds. Turn switch OFF. Repeat procedure for right magneto. 
i. j. k.  — CAUTION — VERIFY CORRECT ENGINE BTDC ON ENGINE DATA PLATE. After both magnetos have been timed, connect timing light wires to both magnetos and check magneto timing as described to make sure magnetos are set to fire together.  If timing is correct, both timing lights will come on simultaneously when 25 degree mark on ring gear aligns with drill hole in starter housing. Reinstall spark plug(s). Torque to 12-15 inch-pounds. Reinstall harness assembly.
