Failure of engine to idle Insufficient fuel pressure. Adjust fuel pressure.
properly. (cont) Fouled spark plugs. Incorrect idle adjustment. Uneven cylinder compression. Faulty ignition system. Clean or replace plugs. Adjust throttle stop to obtain correct idle. Check condition of piston rings and valve seats. Check entire ignition system.
. Low power and uneven running. Mixture too rich; indicated by sluggish engine operation, red exhaust flame at night. Extreme cases indicated by black smoke from exhaust. Mixture too lean; indicated by overheating and backfiring. Leaks in induction system. Defective spark plugs. Improper fuel. Magneto breaker points not working properly. Defective ignition wire. Defective spark plug terminal connectors. Readjustment of carburetor by authorized personnel is indicated. Check fuel lines for dirt or other restrictions. Tighten all connections. Clean and gap or replace spark plugs as necessary. Drain fuel tank and refill with recommended grade fuel. Clean points. Check internal timing of magnetos. Check wire with electric tester. Replace defective wire. Replace connections on spark plug wire.

TROUBLE CAUSE REMEDY
Failure of engine to Leak in the induction system. Tighten all connections and
develop full power. Throttle lever out of adjustment Improper fuel flow. Restriction in air induction. Improper fuel. Faulty ignition. replace defective parts. Adjust throttle lever. Check strainer, gauge and flow at the fuel inlet. Examine air intakes and remove restrictions. Drain and refill tank with recommended fuel. Tighten all connections. Check system with tester. Check ignition timing.
Rough engine. Cracked engine mount. Defective mounting bushings. Uneven compression. Replace or repair mount. Install new mounting bushings. Check compression.
Low oil pressure. Insufficient oil. Air lock or dirt in relief valve. Leak in suction line or pressure line. Dirty oil strainers. Defective pressure gauge. Stoppage in oil pump intake passage. High oil temperature. Fill sump with recommended oil. Remove and clean oil pressure relief valve. Check gasket between accessory housing and crankcase. Remove and clean oil strainers. Replace gauge. Check line for obstruction. Clean suction strainer. See “High Oil Temperature” in “Trouble” column.

CHART 7101. TROUBLESHOOTING (ENGINE) (cont)
TROUBLE CAUSE REMEDY
High oil temperature. Insufficient air cooling. Insufficient oil supply. Low grade of oil. Clogged oil lines or strainers. Excessive blow-by. Failing or failed bearing. Defective temperature gauge. Defective oil cooler lines. Check air inlet and outlet of oil cooler for deformation or obstruction. Fill oil sump to proper level with specified oil. Replace with oil conforming to specifications. Remove and clean oil strainers. Usually caused by worn or stuck rings. Examine sump for metal particles. If found, overhaul engine. Replace gauge. Check inside of oil lines for obstruction flush out lines and oil cooler.
Excessive oil consumption. Low grade of oil. Failing or failed bearings. Worn piston rings. Incorrect installation of piston rings. Failure of rings to seat (new nitrided cylinders). Leaking or damaged oil lines. Fill with oil conforming to specifications. Check sump for metal particles. Install new rings. Install new rings. Use mineral base oil. Climb to cruise altitude at full power and operate at 75% cruise power setting with high oil temperature until oil consumption stabilizes. Replace item.
