Rotation direction is specified on the magneto dataplate.  Left-hand rotation is counterclockwise and right-hand rotation is clockwise as viewed from the mounting end.  When replacing magnetos, replace with the same rotation.
— WARNING —
THE USER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR REFERRING TO THE APPLICABLE VENDOR PUBLICATION(S) WHEN SERVICING OR INSPECTING VENDOR EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN PIPER AIRCRAFT. (SEE INTRODUCTION, PAGE 5.)
Magnetos installed in this series PA-44-180 are Slick 4300 series.  Refer to Unison's Slick Aircraft Products F1100 Master Service Manual when servicing these magnetos.
— WARNING —
ENSURE THAT THE PRIMARY CIRCUITS OF BOTH ENGINES ARE GROUNDED AND THE IGNITION SWITCH IS OFF, BEFORE WORKING ON EITHER ENGINE.
— WARNING —
REMOVE HARNESS ASSEMBLIES FIRST AND INSTALL THEM LAST TO MINIMIZE DANGER OF STARTING ENGINE INADVERTANTLY WHEN GROUND LEAD IS REMOVED FROM MAGNETO.  I. E. - THESE MAGNETOS ARE NOT INTERNALLY GROUNDED AND MAGNETO IS HOT WHEN GROUND LEAD IS DISCONNECTED.

TROUBLESHOOTING.
CHART 7401.  TROUBLESHOOTING (MAGNETO)
Trouble Failure of engine to start. Failure of engine to idle properly. Low power and uneven running. Failure of engine to develop full power.  Cause Defective spark plugs. Defective ignition wire. Defective battery. Improper operation of magneto breaker. Faulty ignition system. Defective spark plugs. Magneto breaker points not working properly. Defective ignition wire. Defective spark plug terminal connectors. Faulty ignition.  Remedy Clean and adjust or replace spark plugs. Check with electric tester and replace defective wires. Replace with charged battery. Check points. Check internal timing of magnetos. Check entire ignition system. Clean and gap or replace spark plugs. Clean points. Check internal timing of magnetos. — WARNING —
GROUND PRIMARY CIRCUIT OF THE ENGINE BEFORE ENGINE WORK IS BEGUN.
— CAUTION —
MAGNETO SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS IN THIS MANUAL COVER MINOR REPAIRS AND TIMING.  FOR FURTHER REPAIRS AND ADJUSTMENTS OF MAGNETOS, FOLLOW MANUFACTURER’S SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS.
REMOVAL OF MAGNETOS.
1.  Before removing magnetos, verify magneto switches are OFF.
— WARNING —
THE MAGNETO IS NOT INTERNALLY GROUNDED.  WHEN GROUND LEAD IS DISCONNECTED MAGNETO IS HOT.  REMOVING HARNESS ASSEMBLIES FIRST, AND INSTALLING THEM LAST, MINIMIZES DANGER OF STARTING ENGINE ACCIDENTALLY WHEN GROUND LEAD IS REMOVED FROM MAGNETO.
2.
Remove harness assembly with spark plug wire housing from magneto.

3.
Disconnect ground lead at magneto.

4.
Disconnect Tachometer magnetic sensor harness at the quick connector.

5.
Remove nuts and washers, and remove magnetos from engine.

INSPECTION OF MAGNETOS.
1.
At engine inspection or when a magneto has been removed from engine, check as follows:

2.
Remove the magneto harness cap from the magneto and inspect for the presence of moisture and/or carbon tracking due to moisture.

3.
Magneto to engine timing must be checked every 100 hours or at annual inspection, whichever comes first.

4.
Inspect distributor block for cracks and burned areas.

5.
Check contact assemblies for burning and wear every 500 hours.  Do the following steps:

a.
Inspect points for discoloring. If points have a white frosty surface around edges, points are functioning properly.  Apply M- 1827 cam grease sparingly to each cam lobe before assembly.

b.
Inspect points for discoloring and pitting. (Figure 74-1) If these conditions are evident, replace both condenser and points.

— CAUTION —
POINT OPENING FOR THESE MAGNETOS IS CRITICAL WHEN SETTING BREAKER POINTS, STAY WITHIN SPECIFIED 0.008-0.012 INCH TOLERANCE.  THE MOST EFFICIENT SPARK IS OBTAINED AT THIS POINT SETTING.
c.  Check gap after retainer screws are tightened.
74-10-00 Page 74-7 Issued: April 1, 1997
4.  Inspect carbon brush in distributor gear for wear, cracks, and chipping every 500 hours. Do the following steps:
a.
Measure carbon brush length from distributor gear shaft to end of brush. Minimum length is 0.03125 inch. If any of the above conditions are evident replace carbon brush.

b.
Check bearing in distributor block and bearing bar for lubrication. If needed add a drop of SAE #20 non-detergent oil to each bearing.
