D.  Procedure

 (1)  Equipment Instructions
 (a)  
Examine all of the altraviolet (UV) light filters and reflectors each day to be sure that they are clean and serviceable. 1) Replace or clean them if it is necessary.

 (b)  
Use only a mercury 100 watt PAR 38 UV bulb with a Woods Glass Filter (for example, KOPP 41).

 (c)  
Examine the UV lights for the correct intensity as follows.


 1)  Do a check of the UV intensity of all of the black lights at least one time each 7 days. a) Do a check after each bulb replacement. b) Use a calibrated UV light meter.
 2)  The UV light meter must measure electromagnetic radiation in the near-ultraviolet range where the wavelength is from 320 to 400 nm (3200 - 4000 Angstroms). a) It must have an accuracy of plus or minus five percent
 of its full range. b) Approved light meters are, but are not limited to, the names that follow:
 Ardrox Inc. - Model DLM-1000 Spectronics Corp. - Models DM-365N or DM-365X Tokushu Toryo Co. - Model UV-2500II
 3) The UV light must be on for a minimum of 10 minutes to become warm. 4) Do a check of the intensity of the UV light as follows. a) Use a UV light sensor or a combination UV/white light meter and a UV light sensor. b) Move the light sensor to get a maximum meter indication.
 5)  The minimum intensity is 1000 uw/cm. (that is 1000 microwatts per square centimeter) at a distance of 15 inches (38.1 cm) from the surface of the part.
 (d)  The white light meter (used to measure the ambient white light intensity at the inspection surface) must measure incident light from zero to a minimum of 250 footcandles. 1) It must have an accuracy of plus or minus 10 percent of its
 full range.

 (2)  General Inspection Instructions
 (a)  
The source procedure gives the sensitivity of the penetrant that you must use. 1) Do not use a penetrant with a lower sensitivity than the

 procedure in the manual gives.

 (b)  
The inspection area must have protection from white light.

 (c)  
Let your eyes adjust to the dark inspection area for at least one minute.

 (d)  
Put the UV light in a position to prevent glare during the inspection.

 (e)  
If it is necessary, use magnificaton (10X maximum) and white light to find a discontinuity.

 (3)  Examine the part.
 WARNING: DO NOT GET THE SOLVENT IN YOUR MOUTH, OR EYES, OR ON YOUR
_______ SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM THE SOLVENT. WEAR PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU USE THE SOLVENT. KEEP THE SOLVENT AWAY FROM SPARKS, FLAME, AND HEAT. THE SOLVENT IS POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE AND IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
 REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL INFORMATION (HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND CONTROL MEASURES).
 CAUTION: DO NOT USE A VISIBLE DYE PENETRANT ON AN ENGINE PART
_______ BEFORE YOU MAKE AN INSPECTION OF THE PART WITH FLUORESCENT PENETRANT. FLUORESCENT PENETRANTS AND VISIBLE DYE PENETRANTS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE. THE ABSORPTION OF VISIBLE DYE PENETRANT WILL MASK INDICATIONS AND DECREASE THE SENSITIVITY OF THE FLUORESCENT PENETRANT INSPECTION.
 DURING INSPECTION, DO NOT WEAR EYE GLASSES THAT HAVE LENSES WHICH BECOME DARK IN THE UV LIGHT. THESE GLASSES DECREASE YOUR VISION.

(a)  Clean the inspection area fully as follows.
 1)  Make a cloth moist with one of these materials.
 a) Solvent (P11-005)
 b) Alcohol (P11-014)
 c) Acetone (P11-032)
 d) Solvent (P11-038)
 e) Solvent (P11-039)

 2)  Make sure that you have no grease, oil, or dust in the inspection area.
