The OFF and INOP (NAV) mode positions of the switch are connected so that the OFF mode can be selected by turning the switch to either one of these positions.

(3)  
The HDG-GA mode is selected by turning the mode selector switch to the HDG mode directly from the GA position without stopping in the OFF position. The go-around light should continue to show green when this is done.

(4)  
The HDG V/L submode is selected by turning the mode selector switch to the HDG mode before turning to the VOR/LOC mode. When this is done, the VOR/LOC (Amber) light will come on in the display annunciator, and remain on until the display is switched to the green VOR/LOC light by mode signals from the computer. This happens when the appropriate beam is sensed. The circuit is shown in Fig. 3.

Direct VOR/LOC mode may be selected by rotation of mode selector to MAN GS and then to VOR/LOC. At this time the green VOR/LOC annunciator will come on (engage).

NOTE: The switch has to be depressed in order to select MAN GS.

(6)  
The AUTO APP mode is selected by turning the mode selector switch to AUTO APP. This causes the amber GS light at the F/D annunciator to come on. The mode and annunciation will automatically switch to the green GS light when the GS beam capture sensor is operated (Ref Operation). Alternatively, GS mode can be obtained by turning the mode selector switch to MAN GS.

Automatic capture of the localizer and glide slope beams can be accomplished from the HDG mode. This is done by selecting the HDG position on the mode selector switch before turning to the AUTO APP mode. The amber VOR/LOC and HDG SEL lights will come on until LOC capture occurs at which time the green VOR/LOC light will come on and the HDG SEL light will go off. LOC capture will automatically arm the computer for capture of the glide slope beam.

C.  Altitude hold selection is activated by placing the altitude hold switch to ON in HDG, VOR/LOC or AUTO APP. Setting the altitude hold switch to on will cause the F/D ALT HOLD light to come on. If the mode selector switch is in the AUTO APP mode and the glide slope has been intercepted or if the selector switch is turned to MAN GS, the altitude hold switch will automatically return to OFF.
D.  The PITCH CMD knob on the flight director control panel is used to select the pitch command angle of climb or descent. The manual pitch command synchro in the control panel, controlled by the manual pitch command knob supplies the manual pitch command signal to both computers. The computers can only operate in the manual pitch mode when the altitude hold switch is not on and only during the HDG and VOR/LOC modes and before GS capture in the AUTO APP mode.
E.  The control panel also contains two course selector controls and one heading control, each with associated digital readouts, to permit manual selection of the desired heading and course. It also contains the synchro-resolvers for development of heading and course error signals to the flight director computers and heading and course select signals to position the HSI heading markers and course arrows. The heading and course selection operates as follows:
(1)  
The heading knob controls heading selection for both systems and the setting of the HSI heading markers. The digital readout above the knob indicates the selected heading.

(2)  
The left-hand course knob controls course selection for the captain's system and the right-hand knob for the F/O's system. The knobs control the setting of the HSI course pointer. The digital readouts above the knob also indicate the selected course.
