(d)
Rotate the Capt's COURSE knob on the AFCS control panel clockwise. The course arrow on the Capt's HSI shall rotate clockwise. The digital course readout on the AFCS control panel shall display increasing course.
(e)
Rotate the Capt's COURSE knob on the AFCS control panel counterclockwise. The course arrow on the Capt's HSI shall rotate counterclockwise. The digital course readout on the AFCS control panel shall display decreasing course.
(f)
Using the COURSE knob, rotate the course arrow on the Capt's HSI 360°, stopping the arrow for readings on each 45° increment. The digital readout shall agree with the course arrow within +1 degree.
(g)
Repeat steps (a) thru (f) using the F/O's COURSE knob on the AFCS control panel and F/O's HSI. Observe same result as under corresponding step for Captain.

HDG Input for Remote Course/Heading Select on the AFCS Control Panel
(a)
Set the SLAVED/DG switches to DG on both compass controllers. Use the SET HDG knob to set both compasses to 000 degree. Set both the course knobs and HDG knob on the AFCS control panel to 000 degree. The HDG bugs and the course arrows on both HSIs shall be under the lubber line and read 000 +1 degree as read against the compass cards.
(b)
By means of the SET HDG knob on the Capt's COMPASS Controller, rotate the Capt's HSI compass card thru 360°, stopping every 45°. After the SET HDG knob is released, the Capt's HSI HDG bug and course arrow shall read 0 +1 degree with respect to the compass card at each 45°.
(c)
Set the course and HDG knobs on the AFCS control panel to 90°. By means of the SET HDG knob on the Capt's compass controller, rotate the Capt's HSI compass card thru 360°, stopping every 45 degrees. After the SET HDG knob is released, the HDG bug and course arrow shall read 90 + 1 degrees as read against the compass card at each 45 degrees.
(d)
Set the course and HDG knobs on the AFCS control panel to 180°. By means of the SET HDG knob on the Capt's compass controller, rotate the Capt's HSI compass card thru 360°, stopping every 45 degrees. After the SET HDG knob is released, the HDG bug and course arrow shall read 180 + 1 degrees as read against the compass card at each 45 degrees.
(e)
Set the course and HDG knobs on the AFCS control panel to 270°. By means of the SET HEG knob on the Capt's compass controller, rotate the Capt's HSI compass card thru 360°, stopping every 45 degrees. After the SET HDG knob is released, the HDG bug and course arrow shall read 270 + 1 degrees as read against the compass card at each 45 degrees.
(f)
Repeat steps (b) thru (e) utilizing the AFCS control panel, F/O's compass controller, F/O's HSI. Same results as in steps (b) thru (e) shall be obtained.

REMOTE COMPASS TRANSMITTER - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. General
A. The remote compass transmitter (flux valve) is extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. It should never be exposed to strong fields in its vicinity. Perform demagnetication of area near flux valves shown in Fig. 401 when necessary (Ref 34-24-0, Maintenance Practices).
B. Care should be exercised in handling and transporting the flux valve since the sensing element is mounted to allow 30 degrees of movement in the pitch and roll axes.
C. The flux valve is preindexed by the vendor to the plate upon which it is mounted, thus permitting flux valve replacement without system recalibration. The vendor adjusted screws should not be removed or loosened for flux valve replacement purposes.
2. Equipment and Materials
A. Maintenance stand of sufficient height to reach the flux valve access panels in the tail fin.
3. Remove Flux Valve
CAUTION: USE NONMAGNETIC TOOLS AND FASTENERS WHEN WORKING WITHIN 3 FEET OF FLUX VALVE OR COMPASS SYSTEM CALIBRATION MAY BE DISTURBED.
DO NOT MEASURE FLUX VALVE CONTINUITY WITH AN OHMMETER. CURRENT FLOW THROUGH SENSING COILS MIGHT DAMAGE UNIT.
A. Remove electrical power from the compass system by opening the applicable circuit breakers on the P6 and P18 circuit breaker panels.
B. Remove access panel to gain access to flux valve and mounting. Bag screws and attach to access panel (Ref Chapter 12, Access Doors and Panels).
