GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STRIPPING OF ELECTRICAL CABLES _________________________
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
 _______
1. General
This topic gives the requirements and the miscellaneous processes to strip the various types and gauge of electrical cables encountered on aircraft. Any crimping or soldering operation must be preceded by the stripping of the conductor.
 __________
2. Definition The stripping operation must remove the insulation from the cable over a given length with tolerances without damaging the core strands or the shielding and without reducing the original performance of the cable. The insulation must be cut clean and not start tears or unwanted untwining of the insulating sheath.
 ____
NOTE : Stripping of a wire end implies the quasi immediate connection of the wire. Do not store stripped cables.
 ___________________3. Stripping procedure
 A. The product to strip : The product can be all the existing cable types (singlecore or multicore cables, standard, screened or coaxial cables). But the method to strip is not the same. A difference is made between the cables that require a specific procedure due to the cable characteristics. These characteristics can be related to the materials that make up the cable, to their specific design in the case of coaxial cables (impedance), to the type of each conductor part of the assembly in the case of specific single or multicore cables. Example : Multicore cable E0299 HD comprises a coaxial cable, plus a five-wire shielded cable, plus a single core. The wire or wires that make up a shielded cable will be dealt with as a singlecore cable after the shielding of this cable has been stripped and cut to length.
 B. The stripping length
 (Ref. Fig. 001)

 (1) Single core or each element of a multicore cable : The stripping length depends on the length required to connect the wire conductor to the end component and also depends on the dimensions of the end component barrel plus the tolerances of the stripped cable aft of the barrel.

20-25-11 Page 2

This length "A" is given in the topic relevant to the use of each end
 component.
The tools necessary to strip depend on the gauge of the wire to be
 stripped.

 (2) Single core or multicore screened cables or coaxial cables : The stripping is done several steps :
 -
step 1 : stripping of the insulation (L stripping length)

 -
step 2 : if necessary, stripping of the screening (L1 and L2
 stripping length)

 -
step 3 : stripping of the conductor(s) (stripping length A)
The miscellaneous stripping lengths are given in the topic relevant
to the use of each end component.
 For the step 1 :
The insulation (PTFE, plastic,...) covers the screening.
The stripping length "L" depends on the length required to connect
the cable and is given in the topic relevant to the use of each end
 component.
Tools such as scalpels or scissors are necessary to strip this
 insulation.
 For the step 2 :
The cutting length for the screening depends on :

 -
the electrical function of the cable and of the screening,

 -
the type of cable,

 -
the type of end component to be connected to the cable.
In all cases, the length of the screening removed must be as short as
possible but sufficient to enable pinning, unpinning and two repairs
to be made at the time of the first wiring.
The length must be approximately :

-50 mm (1.9685 in.) for a screening termination,
