23 MOORABBIN INBOUND
Pilots operating at Moorabbin at night should be
conscious of the potential conflict that exists between
fixed wing and rotary aircraft.
Because helicopters are generally slower than fixedwing
aircraft they tend to fly tighter circuits (closer to
the runway) with a much steeper angle of descent on
final approach. If pilots are not vigilant a collision risk
can exist on short final or over the threshold.
The following tips will help you to ensure separation
at night:
1. KNOW WHERE TO LOOK
"During daylight operations helicopters will generally
operate clear of the runway. At night however
helicopters require the use of runway lighting and
WILL BE OPERATING ON THE ACTIVE RUNWAY"
• Differences between fixed wing and helicopter
circuit patterns. See diagrams
2. AIRCRAFT LIGHTING
• Ensure all available lights are on when in the circuit
3. FIVE IS ENOUGH
MBZ: Maximum of five aircraft (includes helicopters)
permitted in the circuit.
A mix of single and multi engine fixed wing aircraft
commonly operate in the circuit at night. This is likely
to result in aircraft operating at speeds approximately
in the range of 65 - 120 KT during climb, 100 - 130
KT on downwind and 65 - 110 KT on base and final.
Helicopters conducting circuits will be considerably
