62 GENERAL INFORMATION ROCKBANK
The Rockbank VFR approach point can be difficult to identify. Look for a small settlement on the
Western Freeway where the Western Freeway converges with the railway line. There are two small
lakes on the north side of the Freeway which are often dry in the summer. A small hill with a satellite
dish on it is located 4NM south of Rockbank (Mt Cottrell MCOT).
About 2NM before Rockbank (ROK) contact Essendon tower and select transponder code 0100. This
will allow ATC to assess traffic and clearance requirements and coordinate with Melbourne APP/DEP if
necessary.
Airways clearance, if
available, will be issued by
Essendon Tower (125.1). For
example, “Cleared Rockbank
direct to Essendon. Maintain
1500 feet”.
Airways clearance is subject to
Melbourne Airport traffic. If a
clearance is not available, you
will normally be instructed to
“Remain outside controlled
airspace, report again
approaching Westgate
Bridge”.
Caution: Ensure you remain
below the 1,500ft step and
clear of Class C airspace.
When tracking from
Rockbank to Westgate Bridge
OCTA.Do not follow Western
Freeway/railway line.

Airways Clearance: Expect a track and altitude from the VFR approach point then via an
intermediate point to Essendon
Joining the Circuit: The tower will issue circuit joining instructions which will consist of a
visual approach with specific tracking instructions.
Follow Instructions: Do not deviate from your cleared track or altitude until a clearance for
a visual approach is issued.
Radio calls should only include the mandatory readbacks, due to the large number of
movements at Essendon. Refer AIP GEN 3.4-13 (4.4).
