the helicopter's speed will gradually reduce from
approximately 60 KTs to ZERO to come into the hover
- over the active runway. Helicopter final approach
angles are considerably steeper than for fixed wing
Helicopters typically used for training have the
minimum lighting required for night operations. which
consist of navigation lights and a single red flashing
anti-collision beacon. Very few helicopters are fitted
with white anti-collision strobe lights. Most R22
helicopters have a red anti-collision beacon on top of
the tail boom, while AS350 Squirrel helicopters have
the red anti-collision beacon on top of the vertical tail
fin. This means that if a helicopter is descending from
above you, these beacons may effectively be shielded
from your view.
This could make it very difficult to identify the location
of the helicopter when only the navigation lights
might be visible. SO BEWARE

Academy is situated 6NM North East of Moorabbin at an elevation of about 680ft AMSL. It looks like
an old Monastery, and is part of a large complex used as the Victorian Police Training Academy. Other
identifying features in the area are the large “The Glen” shopping Centre and Novotel Hotel about
1NM north-west of Academy, and the nearby intersection of Monash Freeway and Ferntree Gully
Road. Monash University is about 2NM south-west of the Academy.
Obtain Moorabbin ATIS information on 120.9 or 398 NDB well before arriving at Academy. It is advisable
to assess potential traffic in your vicinity by listening to Moorabbin tower on 118.1 before reporting
