– Provide a capability to share real-time arrival data with
users

Overview of SMA
Government/Industry Consensus
• RTCA Government/Industry Operational Concept for the
Evolution of Free Flight, Addendum 1... dated August 20, 1998
defined SMA as an ARTS III data feed that provides:
– Aircraft identification (DOD & sensitive aircraft are filtered)
– Arrival aircraft position in TRACON airspace using ARTS III data
– Predicted knowledge of arrival aircraft information
• SMA data will be accessible by airlines who are expected to
provide it to ramp control personnel
• Users will be responsible for a front end presentation of data

FFP1 SMA Expected Benefits
• Knowledge of arrival aircraft in
TRACON airspace and close-in
adjacent ARTCC airspace allows for:
– Better ground crew management, i.e.,
• Ground crews are normally assigned to
specific flights
• If a flight delay is known in advance,
instead of waiting, ground crews may be
assigned to a different A/C.
– Better ramp management, i.e.,
• Better decisions for holding connecting
flights
• Improved gate management - clear gates
needed for arriving aircraft
– Better ramp management contributes
to better surface management
• Keep narrow ramp areas clear of holding
aircraft
