ACARS BITE - "PINGPONG" LINK TEST Link Test To SWA Headquarters
The "Pingpong" LINK Test will generate a free text message that is sent to SWA Headquarters in DAL. The aircraft should receive a reply shortly after the message is transmitted. The procedures to perform this test is as follows:
-From the ACARS MAIN MENU select LSK 3L, SEND MSG. -From the ACARS SEND MSG Menu, select LSK 1L, DISPATCH. -From the ACARS DISPATCH Menu, select LSK 1R, FREE TEXT. -From the ACARS FREE TEXT page enter the word "PINGPONG"
into the scratch pad and press LSK 1L. An automatically generated free text message will be sent to HDQ and you will see "MESAGE GENERATED PLEASE CHECK MSGS, HAVE A NICE DAY" displayed on the MCDU.
-and within approximately 5-seconds a LINK TEST reply will be received accompanied by a chime and the message "LINK TEST RECEIVED" in the message block.
-From the ACARS FREE TEXT page select LSK 5L, RETURN. -From the ACARS DISPATCH MENU, select LSK 6R, NEW MSGS.
-You should see the message "ACARS LINK RESPONSE,
AUTOMATIC RESPONSE FROM HDQ: ACARS IS
FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY."
NOTE: In some cases where the aircraft is positioned where there is not line of site to the ARINC ground station antenna, a NO COMM condition may be experienced causing delayed uplink response.

ACARS Software
The ACARS CMU is software loadable.
-The software can be loaded using the data loading panel (P61). -Software can also be loaded using the PDL at the front of the CMU using the data load connector. -A third method is to use the PCMCIA card slot on the front of the CMU and a PCMCIA card.
The ACARS CMU is loaded with three types of software:
-Operational Software - basic operation information
-HGI - Honeywell Generated Interface Software
-AMI - Airline modifiable software
NOTE: The software must be loaded in the order listed above.
Training Point
The most common method of loading software into the CMU is using the PCMCIA card slot on the front of the CMU and a PCMIA card. To load the software, do these tasks:
-Pull the CMU circuit breaker.
-Open the PCMIA slot cover,
-Insert the PCMIA card containing the Operational Software.
-Close the Circuit breaker
-The green and red LEDs on the front of the box will flash for
about 3 minutes, followed by a solid green and red for approximately 30 minutes. The solid green and red LED indicates software is being loaded.
-Remove the PCMCIA card when the red LED extinguishes.
-Insert the PCMCIA containing the HGI database software.
-The PCMCIA card must be inserted within 20 seconds of
removing the previous PCMCIA card. -The green and red LED will illuminate for about 5 minutes. -Remove card when the red LED extinguishes. -Insert the PCMCIA card containing the AMI Database Software. It
must be inserted within 20 seconds. -The green and red LED will illuminate for about 5 minutes. -Remove the PCMCIA when the red LED extinguishes. -Close the PCMCIA slot cover and tighten thumbscrew. -The green and red LED on the frount of the CMU will flash for
