 LIFTING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  Two general types of airplane lifting will be covered in this chapter: jack airplane for normal maintenance and lifting damaged airplanes.
 B.  When you jack the airplane for normal maintenance, the main and auxiliary jack points are used. The airplane is usually put on jacks for weighing, leveling, alignment checks, and gear retraction.
 C.  When an airplane must be lifted after being damaged, two major factors to be considered are the surface condition and the extent of damage to the airplane. Generally three lifting methods can be used. A simple and safe method of lifting an airplane in small increments is a series of jacks and cribbing. The second method, pneumatic bags, is necessary when the surface beneath the airplane is unstable or muddy. A relatively low air pressure is needed to raise the airplane using pneumatic bags, and the reaction load on the bottom of the bags can be supported better than a more concentrated load on jacks. Tripod jacks should be installed under the main jack points at the earliest opportunity because pneumantic bags are very unstable and are subject to bursting unless they are in good condition and loads are limited to the indicated capacity of the bag. The third method, mobile cranes, can be used on any surface capable of supporting large cranes. However, mobile cranes cannot be used if the main landing gear support beams have sustained structural damage. During any lifting operation, only approved procedures for lifting and handling the airplane shall be used.
