• All pallets must be constructed of new timber, with no signs of infestation or
incursion of borers, ants or other insect or animal infestation.
• Pallets must be constructed with a flat base screwed to the pallet frame with all
screws recessed into the base.
• The preferred base would be 16 to 24 mm plywood, this permits the entire weight
load to be spread over the floor area preventing damage to the aircraft.
• Pallets should be sized according to the size of the cargo, with no cargo
overhanging edges of the pallet
• The pallet should then be boxed in a frame of plywood, timber or heavy cardboard
and strapped.
• Cargo within the box must be solidly secured to the pallet using strapping or other
means to prevent movement.
• Pallet sizes should be a minimum of 500mm x 500mm. For over-length items

Air cargo consignments not properly packaged will be repackaged by the airline at the
shippers’ expense and may not be delivered on the expected flight when repackaging
occurs.
PACKAGING – GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Aircraft operating to Christmas Island are currently Airbus A319/A320 series aircraft.
These aircraft cargo holds are manually loaded and the aircraft do not carry pallets or
cargo containers.
Goods that may be transported from international ports are usually packed to suit loading
on to large pallets. Packaging for this transportation is not suitable for manually loaded
aircraft.
All goods for manually loaded aircraft holds must be boxed and in case of heavy items
must be palletized and boxed.
Goods must be packed so that there are no protruding parts which can cause damage to
the aircraft, or persons handling the goods, or impede the movement of other air cargo
during loading or unloading.
PACKAGE MARKINGS
All packages must be marked to “NAME OF RECEIVER OF CARGO” and
“CHRISTMAS ISLAND”
All packages must be marked to indicate the box number e.g. “1 of 2”, or “1 / 2”
All packages should be marked with the airway bill number from the port of origin.
Goods that are of a fragile nature should be marked with “FRAGILE” labels
Good that have been shipped and paid as priority must have “PRIORITY” labels.
AIR CARGO MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MAXIMUM SIZES
Item sizes are restricted by the size of the cargo hold doors, which whilst large compared
to other aircraft of this size, still require attention in order to ensure that a bulky items can
be loaded.
The table below indicates maximum sizes for consignments on the Airbus A319/320
series of aircraft. There is some latitude in these maximum sizes, but only where advance
approval is sought from Austasia Airlines, who will then contact the aircraft owner to
obtain special approval for carriage.
