Oil flows through the primary filter and then through the secondary filter. If the primary filter element becomes clogged, the main oil filter pressure relief valve opens. This lets oil flow directly to the secondary filter element.
The main oil filter pressure relief valve (not shown) is in the main oil filter cover. A retaining ring holds the valve to the cover.
Oil System Pressure Relief Valve
The oil system pressure relief valve keeps the lubrication pump output pressure less than a limit. This prevents damage to the downstream components.
Training Information Point
WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE THE COVER. THE COVER HAS SPRING PRESSURE ON IT AND INJURY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION:  DO NOT TRY TO USE THE AFT PRY SLOT WHEN YOU REMOVE THE COVER. DAMAGE TO THE ADJACENT TUBES AND CABLES CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION:  MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE REMOVABLE PLUG IN THE END OF THE ELEMENT BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE NEW ELEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE PLUG, DAMAGE TO THE ELEMENT CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION:  MAKE SURE THE DETAIL PACKING IS INSTALLED IN THE NEW ELEMENT BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE NEW ELEMENT. IF THE DETAIL PACKING IS NOT INSTALLED, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.

OIL -DISTRIBUTION -ENGINE AIR/OIL HEAT EXCHANGER AND VALVE

Purpose
The engine air/oil heat exchanger valve controls the flow of cooling air through the engine air/oil heat exchanger. The air cools the engine oil to prevent the transfer of heat to the fuel. The cooling air can be 2.5 bleed air or fan air.
Location
The air/oil heat exchanger valve attaches to the rear bulkhead of the intermediate case at the 8:30 position. The air/oil heat exchanger attaches to the valve.
Engine Air/Oil Heat Exchanger Valve
The EEC controls a torque motor in the heat exchanger valve. Servo fuel pressure moves the dual butterfly type valve. Two rotary variable differential transformers (RVDTs) send valve position signals to the EEC. The valve will open if there is no servo pressure or if the EEC can not control it.
A position indicator is on the bottom of the valve.
If a fuel seal leak occurs, a drain tube sends the fuel leakage to the engine/strut overboard drains.
A heat shield cover (not shown) is on the valve.
Engine Air/Oil Heat Exchanger
The engine air/oil heat exchanger is a tube-and-fin type. It has a pressure relief valve.
The pressure relief valve opens if the oil is too cold, or the heat exchanger is clogged. This sends engine oil directly to the outlet of the heat exchanger.
