The pressurized oil flows through the main oil filter. The oil filter differential pressure switch monitors the condition of the filter. Next, the oil flows through the servo fuel heater, engine air/oil heat exchanger, and fuel/oil cooler.
As the oil cools it heats the fuel. The fuel/oil cooler is the primary source of oil cooling. The engine air/oil heat exchanger and valve operate when necessary. The EEC controls the fuel/ oil cooler bypass valve and the engine air/oil heat exchanger valve to control fuel temperature.
If the main oil filter fails, the last chance oil strainers prevent blockage of the oil nozzles.
The lubrication and scavenge oil pump has five scavenge pumps that remove oil and contaminants from the bearing compartments and gearboxes. The scavenge oil returns to the engine oil tank.
The deoiler removes air from the scavenge oil. The air bleeds overboard through the main gearbox.
Indication
The oil indication subsystem monitors this data:

Quantity

*
Main oil filter condition.


The secondary engine display shows oil pressure, temperature, and quantity.
The EICAS display and the status display show fault messages.

OIL -STORAGE -GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Purpose
The engine oil tank contains the engines oil supply.
Location
The engine oil tank is on the fan case at the 8:30 position.
Physical Description
The engine oil tank has a maximum capacity of 30 quarts (28.4 liters).
The engine oil tank pressure fill valve has two connections:

Pressure fill

*
Overflow drain.


The engine oil tank cap has a spring-loaded lock. The cap handle has a pointer to show if the cap handle is in the open or closed position.
A filler neck in the tank has a flapper valve (not shown). This valve prevents a fast oil loss if you do not install the cap correctly.
A scupper drain collects oil that flows out of the filler neck during gravity oil fill. The oil drains through the scupper drain line (not shown).
A swirl-type deaerator in the tank removes air from the scavenge oil. A check valve (not shown) keeps the tank pressure at 5-8 psi. If the pressure is higher, the air bleeds to the main gearbox.
The oil tank sightglass gives an indication of the oil level.
