A lead mechanic, positioned approximately 8-10 feet behind the power plant, can observe the level of the power plant and cradle and the rate that the hoists are being operated. The lead mechanic can then instruct which mechanics at each of the hoists to stop operating their hoist while the other hoists catch-up to keep the cradle level. The lead mechanic can also watch the engagement of the forward and aft engine mounts and the strut and instruct which hoist is to be operated.
Lift the engine until there is approximately 6-8 inches between the forward and aft engine mounts and the strut. Use the forward bootstrap hoists to change the roll angle of the power plant so that the engine mounts can align with the strut. Use the forward and aft hoists to adjust the engine pitch.
Slowly continue to lift the power plant engage the alignment shear pins in the forward engine mount from the strut and the aft engine mount from the alignment shear pins in the strut. After the shear pins are engaged, continue to lift the power plant so that the engine mounts come in contact and engage the strut. No gaps are allowed between the mounts and the strut. Watch the loads on the dynamometers are not more than the limits. Install the engine mount bolts and tighten to the correct torque.
Make sure the engine mount bolts hold the power plant to the strut. Reduce the load on the hoists and make sure there are no gaps at the engine mounts. If a there is a gap, load the bootstrap hoists again and retighten the engine mount bolts.

TIP -THRUST REVERSER HOLD-OPEN EQUIPMENT
Normally when you open the thrust reverser (T/R) halves, you attach hold-open rods to the engine to hold the T/R halves open. When you change an engine, you must attach special T/R hold-open equipment to the strut to hold the T/R halves open.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE LEADING EDGE SLATS ARE RETRACTED AND DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU OPEN THE THRUST REVERSERS MORE THAN THE 37 DEGREE POSITION. WHEN THE THRUST REVERSERS ARE OPEN MORE THAN 37 DEGREES, THE LEADING EDGE SLATS WHEN EXTENDED CAN TOUCH THE THRUST REVERSERS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, DAMAGE TO THE LEADING EDGE SLATS AND THRUST REVERSERS CAN OCCUR.
Hold-Open Extension Adapter
To install the T/R hold-open tools you must open the T/Rs to 45 degrees. But, with the forward hold-open rods connected to their standard fan case fittings, the T/Rs will not open that far. You must install hold-open extension adapters.
